Elon Musk shared the latest developments regarding Tesla’s self-developed AI chip on X, clearly outlining the production plans and timelines for AI5, AI6, and AI7 for the first time.

“Slightly different versions of the Tesla AI5 chip will be made at TSMC and Samsung simply because they translate designs to physical form differently, but the goal is that our AI software works identically.

We will have samples and maybe a small number of units in 2026, but high volume production is only possible in 2027.

AI6 will use the same fabs, but achieve roughly 2X performance. Aiming for a fast follow to AI5, so hopefully mid 2028 for volume production of AI6.

AI7 will need different fabs, as it is more adventurous.”

AI5: Produced by TSMC and Samsung

Musk stated that the AI5 chip will be manufactured by TSMC and Samsung Electronics. Due to differences in the physical implementation methods of the two manufacturers, Tesla will have slightly different versions, but the goal is to keep the software consistent across different versions.

This dual-factory strategy will enhance supply chain security and prepare for future large-scale deployments. According to Musk’s timeline, AI5 will have sample chips released in 2026 and enter mass production in 2027.

AI6: Performance Boost of 2x, Planned for 2028 Production

Following AI5, Tesla will launch the AI6 chip. Musk indicated that AI6 will continue to use the same foundries and achieve approximately double the performance, with mass production expected in mid-2028.

This indicates that Tesla plans to continue chip development within the same manufacturing system, maintaining software compatibility and production rhythm continuity.

AI7: Utilizing New Processes, Positioned at the Cutting Edge

Regarding the next generation product further down the line, Musk revealed: AI7 will use different foundries as it is more exploratory.

This means AI7 may introduce entirely new process routes or adopt different packaging and architectural forms, but details have not yet been disclosed.

Timeline

AI5: Sample in 2026, mass production in 2027AI6: Approximately 2x performance boost, mass production in 2028AI7: Utilizing new processes, timeline TBD

💬 If the AI5 chip will not be used in vehicles until 2027, it also means that new cars will only enter this hardware platform at that time. Will you wait for the AI5 to be in your car before changing vehicles?
