A recent corporate report released by Sony reveals the future layout of its Alpha camera business, with particular attention to new sensor technologies and innovative lens planning, outlining a clear technological upgrade blueprint for image creators.
In the sensor field, Sony has clearly stated that it is advancing a newly commissioned advanced process technology, which will support the production of a new multi-layer stacked (three-layer) sensor while optimizing global shutter sensor technology suitable for mirrorless cameras. The official document mentions that density enhancement is a key trend driving the further evolution of sensor performance, and this goal will be achieved through the adaptation of the aforementioned advanced process technology nodes and the three-layer stacked structure realized by leveraging the stacking technology advantages of the I&SS department. Sony plans to enhance sensor value through these two technologies, thereby driving business growth. In particular, the global shutter technology for interchangeable lens camera image sensors has garnered significant attention in the industry and is currently being continuously advanced through close collaboration within the group. The report also includes a diagram comparing the differences between two-layer and three-layer stacking, showing that three-layer stacking exhibits superior potential in image quality enhancement, feature strengthening, and multifunctionality. Previously, Sony had also published a special article on three-layer stacked sensors.

Regarding lenses, the 50-150mm f/2.0 GM lens previously launched by Sony has become one of the few innovations in the industry due to its outstanding optical performance. In this report, Sony clearly stated that it will continue this direction and will launch more similar innovative lenses in the future. The plan indicates that it will promote imaging technology through the joint development of exclusive sensors with the I&SS department while expanding the innovative lens product line to enhance the imaging expression capabilities of different types of creators.
In terms of business objectives, Sony’s Entertainment, Technology, and Services department has set a clear growth path: from fiscal year 2024 to 2027, it plans to increase the proportion of high-profit “regional expansion” and “business growth/innovation” businesses by more than 10 percentage points, accelerating the transformation of its business portfolio; by fiscal year 2027, the department aims to achieve a 10% operating profit margin and free cash flow (FCF) of 160 billion yen (approximately 7.84 billion RMB at current exchange rates).
Technical expert George M interpreted this report as a continuation of the previous 24-26 mid-term plan, while clarifying the investment direction for the next phase. Notably, the Sony Entertainment department is actively developing a new exclusive sensor, while the I&SS department is simultaneously advancing the newly approved three-layer stacked advanced process technology and global shutter sensor optimization, making the combination of the two significant. He speculated that related new products are expected to be launched in the coming years, with optimistic estimates suggesting they could be available to consumers by 2027. Additionally, Sony proposed to “transform camera, service, and other imaging businesses into the content creation field,” which means that future cameras equipped with global shutters may be offered at more affordable prices for content creators.
Based on previous information, the head of the Sony FX series products mentioned that users only need to wait a little longer for significant upgrades and surprises. Now that the business plan has been further confirmed, new technologies such as three-layer stacked sensors and global shutters have entered the research and development stage. It is speculated that as early as the second half of next year, Sony may launch cameras equipped with innovative sensors, which may possess unique and competitive performance that is difficult for peers to surpass. At the same time, Sony’s determination to continue breakthroughs in lens design has also filled the market with expectations—based on the outstanding performance of its past products, the upcoming new lens products are likely to bring more surprises.
