Personalized Greetings
Illuminating a Beautiful Campus
A greeting robot makes the school beautiful!
—— Luqiao Primary School’s Project-Based Learning “Greeting Robot”
01
/ Project Background /
Every morning at the entrance of Luqiao Primary School, the greetings exchanged between teachers and students create a beautiful scene. Five children noticed that if foreign guests visit and the duty teacher is not on duty, while the children are in class, how can this strong etiquette be continued? They wanted to create a greeting robot to support the campus civility initiative.

How to create an environmentally friendly, intelligent, and aesthetically pleasing greeting robot?
03
/ Project Introduction /
This project—the greeting robot—is based on the mascot of Luqiao Primary School, “Wenwen,” and is made from recyclable materials. Keywords: intelligent, environmentally friendly, polite, and excellent! Five first-grade students collaboratively planned, discussed, and created, conducting repeated experiments to enable “Wenwen” to greet in a personalized manner, supporting the campus civility initiative.

This project aligns with the STEAM education development concept, cultivating children’s ability to identify and solve problems, while also enhancing their overall quality.

Iterative upgrades, the transformation of Wenwen
The four major versions of iteration have made Wenwen environmentally friendly, intelligent, aesthetically pleasing, and polite.
Version 1.0: Using bamboo strips as the main material, the framework was constructed through measuring and cutting methods, creating the head, body, etc. When the bamboo strips formed the shape of the head, an old skin jacket was used for wrapping, but due to excessive force on the head, it deformed.

Version 2.0: A balloon was used as the head, wrapped in a skin jacket, and an old small model hanger was used to keep it upright.

Version 3.0: Non-woven fabric and cotton from old toys were used to fill the headgear. This process not only taught the children about axial symmetry in mathematics but also enhanced their hands-on skills and environmental awareness.

Version 4.0: Foam balls replaced the balloons. Due to outdoor lighting, the sound effect was poor. The five children changed the sensor from infrared to ultrasonic.

Core Technology of the Project – Hardware: A development board, an expansion board, an ultrasonic module, a voice playback module, a speaker, an amplifier module, and a speaker.

Core Technology of the Project – Software: Using Microsoft’s MakeCode development environment,
https://makecode.microbit.org/ import the source code, then plug in the development board to download.

Project Results
Thus, Wenwen was born!

Project Evaluation
The project is ongoing, and evaluations are also being conducted.
Self-evaluation: Everyone can be realistic.

Peer evaluation: Everyone can discover each other’s strengths.

External evaluation: Everyone can evaluate the project from multiple dimensions.

In summary, throughout this process, the children’s learning ability, cooperation, and innovative exploration skills have greatly developed.

The project’s brochure is also very detailed, receiving praise from parents, teachers, and classmates.

At the second project-based promotion meeting in Luqiao District, Wenwen also brought greetings and was loved by the children.

Wenwen has gone live, and she has arrived at the school gate.

06
/ Project Reflection and Development /
Reflecting on the entire process, the project achieved three points:
1. Problem-solving centered “learning by doing”
2. Learning and evaluation integrated guidance “growing through doing”
3. Quality enhancement as the goal “enjoying through doing”
We look forward to version 5.0, where Wenwen will move, be more stable and beautiful, and even count the number of people she greets. We hope to see Wenwen at the school gate, in the library, and in every corner of the campus, not only greeting but also possibly speaking other languages, conveying the voice of civility.
