Over 80 Billion! Mainland China’s Semiconductor Equipment Spending Leads Globally | Insights from Chuangxin Haimen Industry

According to data from SEMI and SEAJ, global semiconductor manufacturing equipment spending is projected to reach $33.07 billion in the second quarter of 2025, a 23% increase compared to the second quarter of 2024.

Regionally, spending in mainland China is the highest in the second quarter, amounting to $11.36 billion (approximately 810.51 billion RMB), accounting for 34% of total spending. However, spending in mainland China in the second quarter of 2025 is expected to decrease by 7% compared to the second quarter of 2024.

Over 80 Billion! Mainland China's Semiconductor Equipment Spending Leads Globally | Insights from Chuangxin Haimen Industry

Taiwan ranks second in spending and has the fastest growth, with spending of $8.77 billion in the second quarter of 2025, a 125% increase from the second quarter of 2024. TSMC is the main driver of growth in Taiwan, with its capital expenditure (CapEx) in the first half of 2025 increasing by 62% compared to the first half of 2024.

South Korea ranks third with spending of $5.91 billion, a year-on-year increase of 31%.

North America saw the fastest growth in semiconductor equipment spending in 2024, with spending of $4.98 billion in the fourth quarter of 2024, a 163% increase from $1.89 billion in the first quarter of 2024. However, spending in North America in the first quarter of 2025 is expected to be $2.93 billion, a 41% decrease from the fourth quarter of 2024. Spending in the second quarter of 2025 is expected to decline again to $2.76 billion. The decrease in spending can be attributed to delays in planned wafer fab construction in the U.S. Intel has postponed the completion of its wafer fab in New Albany, Ohio, from the initially planned 2025 to 2031. Micron Technology has delayed the start of its wafer fab in Clay, New York, from the original target of June 2024 to the end of 2025. Reports indicate that Samsung has pushed back the initial production date of its new wafer fab in Taylor, Texas, from the original target of 2024 to 2027.

In the second quarter of 2025, Japan’s semiconductor equipment spending is expected to be $2.68 billion, a 66% increase from the second quarter of 2024. In the second quarter of 2025, spending in Europe is expected to be $720 million, a 23% decrease from the same period last year. Spending in the rest of the world (ROW) is expected to be $870 million, a 28% decrease.

Semiconductor Intelligence predicts that global capital spending on semiconductor manufacturing equipment will reach $160 billion in 2025, a 3% increase from $155 billion in 2024. The capital spending outlook for 2026 is mixed. Intel expects its capital spending in 2026 to be lower than the anticipated $18 billion for 2025. Micron Technology reports that its capital spending for the fiscal year ending August 2025 will be $13.8 billion and plans to increase spending in fiscal year 2026. Texas Instruments expects its capital spending in 2026 to be between $2 billion and $5 billion, down from $5 billion in 2025. TSMC, the company with the largest capital expenditure, is expected to have capital spending between $38 billion and $42 billion in 2025. TSMC has not yet provided an estimate for capital spending in 2026, but investment bank Needham and Company predicts that TSMC will increase capital spending to $45 billion in 2026 and to $50 billion in 2027.
