According to Taiwanese media reports, industry insiders claim that mini LED technology has matured sufficiently and has even entered mass production this year, although it has not yet reached full-scale production. It is reported that the mini LED backlight technology for LCD IPS displays could become a game changer in the industry.
Insiders say that LCD displays using LED backlight technology far outperform today’s LCD monitors in terms of brightness, contrast, color reproduction, and energy efficiency, and can even compete with AMOLED while controlling production costs. Due to the significant increase in the number of LEDs used for panel backlighting, the new technology can greatly improve the HDR performance of LCD screens. For example, a standard smartphone with a 5-inch display contains about 25 LED units, while mini LED backlighting can include 9,000 to 10,000 units. This finer control will lead to better HDR performance.
Although OLED panels are still better due to their ability to dim individual pixels, mini LED backlight displays can still meet the extreme demands of local dimming when displaying HDR content. Better yet, the new screens can also compete with AMOLED displays in terms of thickness.
Looking ahead, mini LED backlight panels are the foundation for future micro LED backlight panels, which are currently difficult to produce due to complicated repairs and the need to adjust the CRI (Color Rendering Index) to match existing displays. If these issues are resolved, micro LED technology could eventually combine the advantages of both OLED and LCD.
