Some users on social networks have claimed that their iPad mini 6 exhibits a phenomenon where the left and right refresh rates are out of sync when used in portrait mode. If you don’t use it directly, you might not notice it as much, but it becomes quite apparent during actual use.
According to reports from the Science and Technology Innovation Board Daily, there is a significant “jelly screen” problem with Apple’s iPad mini 6 when used in portrait mode. When scrolling up and down in portrait mode, there is a noticeable synchronization issue from right to left on the screen.
The report mentions that an industry expert stated in an interview that the cause of this issue may be due to hardware installation affecting the screen refresh direction. For instance, mobile devices typically refresh vertically, making this issue less noticeable; additionally, screens are tested in both orientations before leaving the factory, and this batch of products may have quality control issues.
Apple customer service stated that they have not encountered this issue before, and users who have received the product can perform remote screen sharing for diagnosis. Regarding returns and exchanges, customer service mentioned that products purchased through the official website can be returned or exchanged within 14 days, but the exact time frame cannot be determined.
In addition to the “jelly screen” issue with the iPad mini 6, the newly released iPhone 13 series has also been reported to have bugs, such as issues with backup restoration and the macro mode switch.

Users: It’s a Normal Physical Phenomenon of LCD Screens, but Also a Design Flaw
A user on Zhihu, @一里波奇, believes that the jelly effect is actually influenced by refresh speed and direction; the formation of a frame occurs pixel by pixel and line by line, leading to delays in pixel imaging in different areas.
He pointed out that this phenomenon can also be observed in the horizontal use of the mini 5 when scrolling slowly.
Both mini 5 in landscape and mini 6 in portrait produce images from right to left. Given this, it could be argued that the jelly effect is a normal phenomenon for the iPad mini 6?
@一里波奇 considers this a normal physical phenomenon of LCD screens, but personally, he feels it is a design flaw:
The long edge pixel count of the iPad is approximately 1.5 times that of the short edge; under the same refresh speed, completing a frame of imaging takes 1.5 times longer.
This means that the jelly effect on the mini 6 is at least 1.5 times worse than that on the mini 5, compounded by other factors like differing refresh rates and system controls.
This has led to the mini 6’s jelly effect surpassing that of other iPad models and even other electronic devices.
On the mini 6, Apple has slightly optimized horizontal usage scenarios, such as gaming and video experiences; however, it has severely weakened the experience for text and image content, such as web pages, forums, and novels.
When browsing in portrait mode, the displayed content is quite unstable, especially when scrolling with the left hand, where the screen noticeably lags behind (as the pixels are generated from right to left). The user experience suggests that the refresh rate might effectively be halved to 30Hz.
It is reported that the refresh direction is a hardware design issue that cannot be modified at the system level.

If most usage is in landscape mode, such as gaming and video, you can purchase with confidence; this is still a very good iPad.
If most usage is in portrait mode, such as web browsing, Weibo, forums, novels, or comics, or if your usage scenarios are mixed with both portrait and landscape, then you should think carefully before buying…
