Liu Zhaojun is a tenure-track assistant professor, associate researcher, and doctoral supervisor in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at Southern University of Science and Technology, and a part-time assistant professor in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He has served as an associate professor at Sun Yat-sen University, a visiting professor at Carnegie Mellon University in the United States, and a visiting assistant professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, among other positions. Dr. Liu has been researching Micro-LED technology, third-generation semiconductor electronic and optoelectronic device integration, new displays, VR/AR, and other topics for many years. He has won the 2020 SID Peter Brody Prize, the 2019 Southern University of Science and Technology President’s Young Research Award, the first place in the 2019 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Region of the Third Generation Semiconductor Innovation Competition, the Best Technology Award of the 2019 ‘Aladdin Lamp Award’, the Gold Award of the 2018 ‘LED Innovation Award’, and has received Best Paper awards four times; he has published over 100 journal and conference papers; delivered more than 40 invited talks domestically and internationally; applied for more than 20 US/international patents and over 100 Chinese patents; authored three monographs in Chinese and English; served as a guest editor for ‘Nanomaterials’, ‘Crystals’, and a young editorial board member for ‘Liquid Crystal and Display’, organized more than 20 academic conferences at home and abroad; and is a committee member of the SID International Society for Information Display EMQ Technical Committee, co-chair of the 2018 Display Week QD & Micro-LED special session, technical committee member of the SID Beijing Branch, member of the CASA Micro-LED Special Committee/Youth Committee, executive secretary of the Guangdong Micro-LED Industry Technology Innovation Alliance, core member of the Guangdong ‘Pearl River Talent Plan’ innovation team, leader of the Shenzhen ‘Overseas High-level Talent Plan’ innovation team, independent director of Ruifeng Optoelectronics, and chairman and general manager of Shenzhen Sitang Technology.
Modern society has entered the information age and is developing towards intelligence, with display being a key link in information exchange and achieving intelligence. Among many new display technologies, Micro-LED display technology is considered a disruptive next-generation display technology, characterized by self-emission, low power consumption, high brightness, high stability, and long lifespan, and has already found applications in displays, optical communication, biology, and medical fields. Mini-LED is a transitional form in the miniaturization process of Micro-LED, which has already emerged in large-screen displays and dynamic backlighting in the LCD area. In the future, Micro-LED will expand from flat panel displays to augmented reality/virtual reality/mixed reality (AR/VR/MR), flexible transparent displays, wearable/implantable optoelectronic devices, automotive displays, and spatial imaging, among many fields, with clear and observable market prospects.
