Differences Between LCD, OLED, and MiniLED Displays

In terms of power consumption, OLED does not require a backlight like LCD, which is a significant energy-consuming part, making OLED more energy-efficient.

In terms of visual experience, LCD tends to display more realistic images, while OLED leans towards vividness with brighter colors; OLED maintains brightness within a 160° viewing angle, which LCD cannot achieve.

In terms of materials, LCD screens are made of inorganic materials, while OLED uses organic materials, allowing OLED to be thinner and more durable; compared to LCD, OLED can operate within a wide temperature range, functioning normally from -40°C to 80°C. This reduces regional limitations, enabling use in extremely cold areas.

In terms of flexibility, due to the presence of the liquid crystal layer and backlight layer, LCD screens cannot be significantly bent, whereas OLED can be folded like origami; Samsung’s curved screens rely on OLED technology for support. Curved desktop screens are still LCD, showing minimal curvature.

In terms of response speed, OLED screen units respond faster than LCD screens;

From an energy-saving perspective, OLED is more power-efficient than LCD, enhancing battery usage efficiency;

In terms of price, LCD technology is more mature, thus maintaining a price advantage;

From an eye protection perspective, LCD colors are softer, causing relatively less harm to the eyes.

MiniLED can be seen as a comprehensive upgrade of OLED, with a brightness 10 times that of OLED, achieving full-color display in bright outdoor conditions, photonic response speed 1000 times that of OLED, and a lifespan over 10 years, three times that of OLED. Additionally, MiniLED displays can achieve seamless infinite splicing, allowing for large screens of hundreds of inches to be assembled, with a more transparent and flexible display, and power consumption only half that of OLED.

Currently, low-end smartphones primarily use LCD, while high-end smartphones almost exclusively use OLED. The better MiniLED display technology has not yet reached mass production.

OLED is currently widely used in mainstream flagship smartphones.
MiniLED has not yet appeared in mass-produced smartphones, but according to foreign media reports, Apple will release new products using MiniLED display technology in 2021.
