On Sunday, Tesla CEO Elon Musk posted on social media platform X that Tesla is nearing the final stage of the AI5 chip design process (the “tape out”) and has begun developing the next generation AI6 chip, which will be deployed in its vehicles and data centers.
“Our goal is to bring a new AI chip design into mass production every 12 months,” Musk, the world’s richest person, stated. “The version currently in vehicles is AI4, we are about to complete the tape out of AI5, and we are starting work on AI6 development.”

Samsung Electronics Co. announced in July that it had secured a $16.5 billion contract to produce AI semiconductors for Tesla. Musk stated at that time that Samsung’s new factory in Texas would be dedicated to manufacturing AI6 chips.
“We expect that the number of chips we ultimately produce will exceed the total of all other AI chips combined,” Musk added in his Sunday post. “I am not joking.”
