Recently, I saw the news about IBM layoffs, and I started a conversation with my family. My father, hearing about the closure of the China division, asked, “What about Lenovo?” Indeed, many people from that generation still associate IBM with the ThinkPad’s little red dot notebooks.

Indeed, around the turn of the millennium (time flies), the laptop market = ThinkPad and others. Until December 2004, IBM sold its PC division to Lenovo. With Lenovo’s acquisition of the PC division, IBM ended its legendary history in the computer industry and began transitioning to a management services company. If you ever owned a ThinkPad, you might also have this — the IBM ThinkPad external optical drive. Today, let’s revisit the manufacturing process from back in the day with the community’s original poster.

Many years ago, I used an IBM standalone external USB optical drive, which had the function of automatically pulling in and ejecting discs. The quality of the optical drive was quite good; it lasted many years, got dusty for many years, but when taken out, it still worked fine, with fast read and write speeds. With some free time, I decided to take it apart and study its internal design and chip scheme.

So I started disassembling it. The four screws on the outside were easy to remove. Once I opened the plastic shell, I was shocked. The internal optical drive module was made by Apple. That’s right, made by Apple. IBM just added a shell.

Since it was made by Apple, I had to investigate further. Continuing the disassembly, the internal mechanical design and circuit board quality showed that the design technology and craftsmanship were indeed impressive. Removing the mechanical part that handled the disc revealed the core circuit and the brushless motor that drives the disc, as well as the laser head.

The internal mechanics and circuit layout are quite reasonable.

Here’s a global shot to appreciate.

Continuing disassembly.

Let’s take a look at the core circuit; if I’m not mistaken, it should be a set of Panasonic chip solutions.

Overall, this external optical drive’s design is quite good. The circuit board design and internal structure are very simple and rigorous. It achieves the best results while ensuring cost-effectiveness, which is worth learning from.
