In most cases, the touch screen is connected to the PLC, which then connects to the inverter. However, the touch screen can also connect directly to the inverter without going through the PLC. It can control the inverter’s start, stop, frequency change, etc.
Today, we will take the Weicon touch screen controlling the Mitsubishi D series inverter as an example to explain.
The touch screen controls the inverter using RS485-based communication. Traditional RS485 uses two wires, but Mitsubishi’s automation products generally use a four-wire system, so we use four wires for communication between the touch screen and the inverter.
On the inverter side, you need to set the relevant communication parameters, mainly the baud rate, address, and parity bit.
It is important to note that Mitsubishi inverters do not default to MODBUS RTU protocol and require setting parameter 549. The communication data must be consistent between the touch screen and the inverter; otherwise, communication will fail.
On the touch screen side, we add a MODBUS RTU slave.
The communication parameters of the inverter and the touch screen must be consistent, otherwise, communication will fail.
For the inverter to operate, it requires a start signal and a speed signal. Therefore, we need to configure these signals on the screen and send them to the inverter. The addresses for the start signal and speed signal can be found in the inverter manual.
The above shows the corresponding address descriptions from the inverter manual; we just need to implement the relevant start, stop, and speed settings on the screen.
