The learning and growth process of innovative talents is a complete process of mutual integration of knowledge and experience. Only such a process can cultivate “well-rounded individuals” who have a balanced and harmonious development of knowledge, awareness, innovation consciousness, and practical ability. Comprehensive practice activities and STEM education effectively drive the development of students’ innovative spirit, practical ability, cooperation and communication, and teamwork skills by providing real problem-solving scenarios and interdisciplinary learning opportunities.

Project Team Introduction

Our ability to solve practical problems is not innate, nor can it be achieved overnight; it requires continuous learning and practice. By constantly updating knowledge, broadening horizons, applying what we have learned in practice, and improving problem-solving abilities, we can overcome “skill anxiety” and gain initiative, advantages, and a better future.

Research Background

With the increasing emphasis on the harmonious coexistence of human development and the ecological environment, the conflict between power transmission lines and bird activities has become increasingly prominent. The issue of “bird-line conflict” has long troubled power departments and conservation workers. Power outages caused by bird-line conflicts seriously threaten the normal operation of the power system. To ensure the normal operation of human production and life, as well as the harmonious coexistence of humans and birds, it is necessary to take certain measures to control the frequent occurrence of bird damage. Therefore, we are preparing to design an intelligent bird deterrent device for application scenarios such as utility poles.

Design Concept

1. Regardless of the type of bird, they will flee when they sense the approach of a predator. Therefore, we decided to design a bird deterrent device that drives away birds approaching utility poles by emitting sounds of their natural enemies.

2. When a bird’s nest is detected, the device can send a text message to the staff, reminding them to come and handle the situation.

3. A modular design is adopted for easy maintenance.

Design and Production Process

1. Selection and Function of Sensor and Actuator Modules

(1) Ultrasonic distance sensor: Detects obstacles ahead and returns data.

(2) Passive infrared sensor: Detects heat signals emitted by objects and returns data.

(3) Potentiometer: Adjusts the range of the ultrasonic distance measurement.

(4) Button: Saves the potentiometer value and starts the main program.

(5) MP3 module: Plays the sounds of bird predators to drive away birds.

(6) GSM module: Sends text messages to staff, alerting them to the presence of a bird’s nest.

2. Program Writing and Debugging

Considering that the installation location varies each time, and the distance differences, we can directly adjust the detection range of the ultrasonic distance sensor using the potentiometer, eliminating the need to write specific programs for different locations, making it convenient to operate.

When the ultrasonic distance sensor detects a bird’s nest, it sends a text message to the staff. It will not send another alert message until the bird’s nest is no longer detected. This avoids repeated messages if the staff cannot arrive in time.

3. Model Design, Production, and Assembly

The device needs to be small and lightweight for easy installation by technicians and to fit the limited installation space on utility poles. For the initial model, we chose 3mm linden wood as the shell material using laser cutting; the button and potentiometer should be on the same side for easy debugging; the MP3 module should be placed on the top of the device to ensure loud sound from all sides; the main control should be on the opposite side of the detection panel to keep the device’s center of gravity balanced, which is beneficial for stability during placement.

Future Improvement Ideas

1. Improve the device by adding waterproof features to make it more suitable for outdoor environments;

2. Build a server to connect with a mobile APP through the Internet of Things for easier management by staff;

3. Add a camera module so that staff can view real-time video, and optimize the program algorithm to use the camera module to identify birds and simulate the sounds of their natural enemies, enhancing the response effect in various situations;

4. Install solar panels to charge the battery, reducing the need for frequent battery replacements;

5. Add LED lights or LCD displays to show the device’s self-check status and data.

Gains and Prospects

This is the first technology device designed and produced by our group, and there are areas where the design is not mature and has significant room for improvement. Through the design and production of this device, we became familiar with writing and using Arduino in C language, learned to use a laser cutter for panel production, and gained invaluable experience.

By researching and conducting field investigations, we learned that although most urban cables are laid underground, utility poles are still widely used in suburban areas, especially in rural regions. If there are issues with the lines, it can disrupt people’s daily lives or lead to the death of birds and other animals, and even cause casualties. Our device cannot completely solve these problems; it can only alleviate them to some extent, reducing the frequency of line inspections by power workers. In our vision, if we use laser rangefinders and introduce visual modules with high-definition cameras and AI image recognition algorithms, the accuracy of identification and ease of use can be greatly improved, but the costs will also rise accordingly. Additionally, if the utility pole is very close to residential areas, the sounds emitted by the intelligent bird deterrent device may cause noise disturbances, which are also issues that need to be considered and improved.
