Breakthrough! Domestic 3nm Chip Successfully Taped Out, Expected to Enter Mass Production Next Year

In the field of chip research and development, China has more than just Huawei making efforts; Taiwan’s MediaTek has also recently announced some good news!

On September 7, MediaTek announced that its first flagship chip, produced using TSMC’s 3nm process technology, has successfully completed tape-out and is expected to enter mass production next year, with a potential market launch in the second half of next year.

According to 21ic, MediaTek’s flagship chip “Dimensity 9200,” released in November 2022, was the first to utilize TSMC’s second-generation 4nm process technology; the upcoming “Dimensity 9300,” set to be released in the second half of this year, is said to still use the 4nm process. Therefore, it is speculated that next year’s 3nm flagship chip may be the next generation “Dimensity 9400.”

MediaTek stated that TSMC’s 3nm process technology not only provides a complete platform support for high-performance computing and mobile applications but also offers enhanced performance, power efficiency, and yield. Compared to the 5nm process, TSMC’s 3nm process technology increases logic density by approximately 60%; it improves speed by 18% at the same power consumption or reduces power consumption by 32% at the same speed.

However, it is regrettable that although MediaTek is a Taiwanese company, such an advanced and powerful chip cannot be used by Huawei.

According to the official website, MediaTek was established in 1997 and is the fourth largest fabless semiconductor company in the world, leading in markets such as mobile devices, smart home applications, wireless connectivity technologies, and IoT products, with approximately 2 billion terminal products equipped with MediaTek chips launched globally each year.

However, in May 2020, the U.S. imposed unprecedented “sanctions” on Huawei, requiring that from September of that year, all manufacturers using U.S. technology be prohibited from cooperating with Huawei unless they obtain U.S. permission.

Almost at the same time, Qualcomm, Intel, MediaTek, and other manufacturers submitted applications to the U.S. Department of Commerce. However, only U.S. companies like Qualcomm and Intel received permission (to provide Huawei with products stripped of advanced technology), while non-U.S. companies have yet to receive permission from the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Recently, MediaTek CEO Cai Lixing reiterated in a media interview that MediaTek has not yet been authorized to supply Huawei. This means that there is a certain degree of uncertainty in the business cooperation between the two parties.

However, the return of Huawei’s Mate 60 series smartphones is enough to prove that Huawei’s strategy of independent innovation is a successful attempt. For Huawei, this is not only a technical victory but also a declaration of confidence.

As reported by CCTV, “The Huawei Mate 60 series marks an absolute victory for China in breaking through the U.S. technology blockade. After more than four years of extreme pressure from the U.S., Huawei has not only survived but has continued to grow, with over 10,000 components now domestically produced. Huawei’s breakthrough shows that independent innovation has great potential!”

It has been proven that U.S. restrictions do not hinder our development; on the contrary, they only accelerate our self-research speed and strengthen our determination for self-research.

In the future, U.S. policies may not loosen or change, but we have reason to believe that Chinese companies, represented by Huawei, will continue to strengthen their technological research and development, improve their independent innovation capabilities, and strive for breakthroughs in 3nm process technology as well.
