In the field of STEM education, there are two platforms that all teaching teachers know, one is called Arduino, and the other is Raspberry Pi. Below are their images.
For science teachers and workers new to STEM education, which platform should be adopted?
To put it simply, Arduino is a microcontroller, while Raspberry Pi is a fully functional computer. If you have dealt with microcontrollers, you will understand what I mean. If you haven’t, please look at the comparison chart below.
In terms of speed, the Raspberry Pi’s CPU reaches 700M, while Arduino only has 16M, and their performance is not comparable. In terms of storage, it is even less. Most importantly, Arduino does not have an operating system, while Raspberry Pi can run Linux.
From the comparison chart, Raspberry Pi significantly outperforms Arduino in terms of performance; it has better performance and supports more complex software.
However, because Raspberry Pi supports more complex software, it also makes its scalability somewhat worse. For example, if we want to connect a sensor, using Arduino will be much simpler, while using Raspberry Pi will be much more complicated.
If using Arduino for teaching, there are many peripherals that can be easily used without much effort. Similarly, Raspberry Pi can also achieve this, but it is much more complicated.
So Arduino is like a very simplified hardware board; because it is simple, it cannot complete complex tasks, but it is very convenient for education. If it is for general teaching in lower grades, Arduino is recommended.
However, Raspberry Pi is very powerful; it is more suitable for complex functional projects, such as participating in competitions.
