Case Background ▼
The NGCO fiber center office has been redesigned to support fixed and mobile Virtual Network Functions (VNFs), capable of serving thousands of users. Intel’s NCGO reference design achieves this in a compact data center configuration with half-filled server racks, hosting edge network functions such as BNG, vEPC, vCMTS, vSecGW, or vPE routers.
The SKY carrier-grade server is designed for high-performance packet processing while meeting the more demanding requirements of network edge locations, from remote rural sites to old buildings in major urban centers.
System Requirements ▼
The NGCO based on Intel architecture provides NFVI, offering hardware-software decoupling, full configuration flexibility, and scalability, all of which meet the system requirements of the virtual edge. Advantech considered the requirements of communication service providers when designing the NGCO demonstrator, which better utilizes hardware resources, directly impacting the cost per 10Gbps; it provides a more efficient redundancy scheme in a compact, low-depth chassis design to reduce the size and power consumption per 10Gbps.
Additionally, the use of commercial servers avoids vendor lock-in for NFV, allowing new network functions as a service models and opening network advantages to third-party and OTT providers, bringing new opportunities to communication service providers. The demonstrator provides developers with a method to accelerate design cycles using a ready-to-deploy platform that can be deployed with all the necessary NGCO hardware and software building blocks.
System Description ▼
Advantech’s high-performance SKY-8000 server is validated for use with the Intel® NFVI v2 solution, supporting dual CPUs with up to 165W TDP, high-density PCIe card payloads of up to 200Gbps/1RU, and leveraging advanced packet processing technologies such as the open-source Data Plane Development Kit (DPDK) and Intel® QuickAssist.
A 2U telecom rack integrates three controller nodes (SKY-8101), configured in a traditional HA controller; six cloud computing nodes (SKY-8101D), balancing 100Gbps loads through four 25GbE adapters in a 1+1 redundancy configuration or optional dual 100GbE NICs with two switches, and sets up three Cloud Storage nodes (SKY-8201L) as a CEPH cluster.
