Years ago, some economy cars began to use a technology called CAN-BUS, and car salespeople would boast about this technology. However, you might have never seen its true form, and it is not an optional feature. So, what exactly is this?
Can This Local Area Network Be Used for Internet Access?
The CAN-BUS system is certainly more than just a single wire; it can be understood as a local area network installed within the vehicle. However, it is not actually used for internet access; it merely facilitates communication between various sensors and electronic control systems.
This technology was initially used in industrial production. Later, as electronic technologies in vehicles increased, this technology became necessary.
In a vehicle, the control units often require multiple sensors, and these sensors may also be used by other electronic control systems simultaneously. If each sensor and electronic control system could only connect point-to-point, just imagine how complex the wiring would be and how many ports would be needed!
If each sensor and electronic control system communicates through a CAN-BUS controller, resources can be shared, just like a highway reaching many destinations. This greatly reduces the amount of wiring needed and increases response speed.
Are Electronic Devices Really Safe Given Their Sensitivity?
With the introduction of CAN-BUS, many people worry about its safety. With so many sensors using this bus, if a fault occurs, could the entire vehicle become unusable? This is a critical safety concern.
In fact, each functional control is relatively independent. If a fault occurs, it does not affect the operation of other devices. Moreover, these faults can be detected using the OBD (On-Board Diagnostics) system, which can timely reflect issues through warning lights and the dashboard display, enhancing safety.
However, in recent years, some vehicles have been able to connect to the internet, allowing access through the in-car entertainment system or using 4G networks to provide Wi-Fi for mobile devices. This raises cybersecurity concerns: can hackers use the internet to breach a car’s system and take control of the vehicle?
Currently, these concerns are not unfounded. Today’s cars even have automatic parking systems, and some even feature remote control capabilities. In the future, there may even be autonomous driving functions. While there is no definitive evidence proving the feasibility of such issues, some hackers abroad have claimed they possess the capability to breach these systems, which is something to watch for in the future.
