STMicroelectronics x Moji: Transforming AR Glasses with Edge AI

Goal: All-Scene, All-Weather Wear

Imagine, when you wear a pair of AR glasses that feel as light as air, you will almost forget they exist. This is the charm of the AR glasses launched by Moji at CES 2025. Although Moji is not the first company to venture into all-weather wearable AR glasses, it is the first in the world to successfully break the 35-gram weight limit and incorporate an advanced near-eye display system.

However, what truly sets it apart is not just its lightweight design and excellent immersive features, but its ability to provide up to 10 hours of AI-driven experience on a single charge.

What’s the secret? The answer lies in the STM32N6 from STMicroelectronics—a microcontroller designed to seamlessly integrate AI into daily life.

Challenges

Create an ultra-lightweight transparent AR glasses for all-weather wear.Provide 10 hours of AI-driven experience on a single charge.

Solutions

The STM32N6, a high-performance microcontroller from STMicroelectronics, is equipped with two dedicated units: an image signal processing unit and a neural processing unit. Edge AI development tools.

Impact

Drive the mass adoption of augmented reality (AR) glasses. Combine personalized experiences (vision correction) with rich AR experiences.

How the New Microcontroller Redefines AR

Moji’s AR glasses weigh only 35 grams and can provide up to 10 hours of diverse AI-driven experience on a single charge. Before the launch of the STM32N6 by STMicroelectronics, achieving such performance with such a limited energy budget was nearly impossible. So, what makes this microcontroller special? One of the most important reasons is that it includes two highly specialized units: the image signal processing unit (ISP) and the neural processing unit (NPU), known as Neural-ART Accelerator™. The NPU and ISP embedded in the STM32N6 are independently developed by STMicroelectronics, capable of processing massive amounts of data and images using pre-trained AI models and transforming them into valuable operations. This design alleviates the computational pressure on the main processing core of the microcontroller, allowing it to focus on other tasks. This is the key to why Moji’s AR glasses can offer rich AI experiences at such low power consumption.

Using Edge AI to Simplify AR Engineering

Designing stylish yet powerful AR glasses has always been a challenging task. Engineers need to repeatedly balance between the image sensor, ISP, memory, and application processor.STM32N6 makes everything simpler. How does it achieve this? First, there is no need to transfer data back and forth to external memory, as the embedded ISP and 4.2Mb memory can handle all the data. This integrated design reduces system latency while improving energy efficiency. Moreover, the STM32N6 does not require a cooling system, thus reducing the weight of the device.

In short, the STM32N6 creates a virtuous cycle, allowing designers to choose thinner image sensors without the need for additional ISP support. When STMicroelectronics released the STM32N6, Moji quickly saw the opportunity to realize its vision—a pair of all-weather wearable, all-scene AR glasses.

The Possibilities AI Brings to AR Experiences

Specifically, what can AI do for AR glasses? AI empowers AR glasses to achieve advanced functions such as voice recognition and object classification.Imagine, when two users who do not speak the same language communicate, Moji’s AR glasses can capture speech in real-time and translate it, with the translation results seamlessly displayed in front of the user through advanced micro-projection technology. In addition to text, this function also applies to images. We can again imagine, when driving in a foreign country and encountering unfamiliar traffic signs, AR glasses can quickly analyze the content of the signs and display translations or explanations in front of the user. These are just the tip of the iceberg of AI empowerment.Brands can develop countless AI-driven innovative experiences based on Moji’s AR glasses.
