Teacher, can this dinosaur really be printed?
At the teaching point in Junshui Town, Tongcheng County, Wuchang University of Technology, little Liu Jiahao’s eyes widened. A cartoon dragon was being printed, and the children surrounded the machine, as if witnessing magic. Fifteen minutes later, Liu Jiahao held the still-warm “little dinosaur” in his hands, grinning brighter than the sun.
Such moments of surprise are continuously unfolding at various teaching points in Tongcheng County. Recently, the “Qiyuan Plan” volunteer service team from the School of Artificial Intelligence at Wuchang University of Technology conducted a technology education activity in Tongcheng County, Hubei Province, accumulating a total of 28 days and 135 class hours.
The service team fully leveraged the college’s professional advantages in artificial intelligence and smart hardware, carefully crafting two distinctive technology courses: “3D Printing” and “Microcontroller Smart Car”, and achieved full coverage of these courses across nine local teaching points. They “moved” the laboratory to community activity rooms, opening a window to the world of technology for rural children.
In the “3D Printing” class, children witnessed virtual models transform into tangible objects in their hands. A keychain printed with their name, a cleverly designed pen holder, a set of gears embodying mechanical principles… imagination leaped off the screen and became a reality within reach. In the “Microcontroller Smart Car” class, programming control, sensor applications, and mechanical assembly were intricately linked, making artificial intelligence no longer distant and obscure, but rather a series of small cars that could run and flash, crafted by their own hands.
No tedious explanations, no one-way indoctrination.The volunteer team members transformed into “technology guides”, leading the children on an immersive journey of creation from 0 to 1. Luo Bocan, a student from the Electrical Engineering and Automation class of 2305, stated in an interview:
Seeing the children go from initial curiosity, to nervousness during attempts, to cheers of joy after success, is our greatest sense of achievement. Although preparing lessons and debugging is exhausting, their shining eyes and bright smiles are worth more than anything.
“Technology education is a microcosm of Wuchang University of Technology as an application-oriented university rooted in society and serving local areas,” said Li Xueyan, deputy secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Artificial Intelligence.
The school has always insisted on closely integrating talent cultivation, scientific research, and social service, encouraging teachers and students to “write their papers on the land of the motherland”, using technology to assist rural revitalization. This young volunteer service team is lighting up the dreams of more rural students with technology and wisdom.
