Currently, patient care is a significant challenge for patients and their families during the recovery process. Whether in hospitals or at home, regularly turning bedridden patients is crucial to maintain comfort, prevent pressure sores, and preserve limb function. There are even specialized training programs for caregivers on how to turn patients. This issue is particularly critical for patients with limited mobility. Therefore, we aim to design a smart medical care bed that can assist patients with mobility issues in turning over, while also incorporating a temperature and humidity alarm system for patient comfort.

We chose to use PVC boards to create a bed frame that is easier to manage. The bed board consists of nine panels connected by hinges, improving the design by narrowing the six panels on the left and right sides to reduce the load on the hinges. Three push rods are used to achieve left turning, right turning, and sitting up positions.

We continuously improved and optimized the project

01

We found that the push rod movement was not smooth when sitting up, so we designed a sliding groove to allow the push rod to move upward more effectively, while also enabling coordination with the left and right push rods for turning.

02

Through continuous experimentation, we found that the mobility of the front sliding groove was too low, causing it to jam during left and right lifting. Therefore, we first calculated the angles, lengths, and speeds of the three push rods using trigonometric principles, then applied the Pythagorean theorem for basic calculations, and programmed the system to ensure that the middle push rod rises together with the left and right push rods while maintaining a 2:1 length ratio.

03

To make the design more reasonable and effectively applicable, we conducted multiple tests to refine our design. Using PVC resulted in insufficient strength, and the strength of the hinges also needs further testing. The project will continue to be improved in the future.

In this invention, we realized that knowledge comes from practice. Inspired during the practical process, we integrated software and hardware, programming, and completed this project under our teacher’s guidance. Throughout this process, we discussed and collaborated, recognizing the importance of teamwork and the truths learned through practice. In the future, we will uphold the spirit of teamwork and diligent work, continuing to research related projects and strive to contribute to society.

In guiding students, we focus on two aspects: stimulating students’ interest and cultivating their innovative practical abilities. We encourage students to care for the things around them, observe and discover problems in life, and apply their knowledge from science and cultural courses to attempt to solve these problems. The entire process they experience is one of exploration, discovery, and innovation.During the project production process, students primarily engaged in self-directed learning, with teachers providing guidance. In collaborative inquiry-based learning, they learned to research and overcome various challenges, enhancing their teamwork skills and learning how to interact with others.

In the design and production of the medical bed project, the three students worked together, solving their own problems while helping each other. They are diligent and hardworking, able to focus on research. They attempted to use mathematical methods to solve the coordination issues of the push rods, innovating parts of the structure through multiple trials. Our first generation of medical bed creators, Hao Xueqing, Wang Yuntao, and Ma Jingsong, successfully applied for a national utility model patent and smoothly advanced to higher education. This is the second batch of students researching the medical bed. Many inventions require the persistent efforts of many people, and now a third batch of students continues the research. We hope the school can cultivate more outstanding students who are observant, innovative, diligent, thoughtful, and capable. We hope our medical bed continues to improve and can be truly applied in real life.

This project addresses the difficulties patients face in turning over during rehabilitation care and the labor intensity for caregivers by designing a smart medical care bed. It employs mechanical design theory to create a mechanism for automatic patient turning, thereby reducing the labor intensity for caregivers. By utilizing environmental sensing technology, such as ambient light sensors and temperature and humidity sensors, it replaces the need for caregivers to manually assess conditions, facilitating timely detection of symptoms like fever, sweating, and wetness. This is of significant importance. Students Zhang Tianle, Hu Yongji, and Guo Xiangyi have identified issues in the patient rehabilitation care industry from daily life and proposed solutions based on patient operability and caregiver labor intensity. They completed the development and debugging of both hardware and software according to their design proposals, successfully achieving the designed system functions and meeting the expected design goals through experimental testing. This reflects the students’ strengths in observation, innovation, thoughtful consideration, and practical skills. In future improvements, it would be beneficial to further clarify the specific mobility needs of patients and enrich the types of auxiliary actions, thereby enhancing the quality of patient care and reducing the burden on caregivers, which would further increase the practicality of this project. I hope the students will continue to strive for excellence and reach new heights!
