Hi, I am A Cheng, this is my 148th article, today I will talk about#Domestic Semiconductor Technology.

In recent years, with the rapid development of technology, the semiconductor industry, as one of the foundations of modern information technology, has received increasing global attention. The Chinese semiconductor industry has made significant progress through technological innovation and industrial integration, especially in some core technology areas, where it has taken the lead globally. This article will introduce the technological breakthroughs and global leading position of the Chinese semiconductor industry from five aspects.
1. Semiconductor Materials
Semiconductor materials are the foundation of chip production, determining the performance of semiconductor devices. For decades, silicon materials have been the mainstay of the semiconductor industry. However, with the increasing demand for high efficiency, high frequency, and high temperature, two wide bandgap semiconductor materials, silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN), have received more and more attention.
China has made breakthrough progress in the research and industrialization of these two materials. Especially in the field of silicon carbide, Chinese research teams have not only made significant breakthroughs in material purity and crystal growth but are also at the global forefront in the manufacturing process of silicon carbide power devices. Many domestic companies, such as China Electronics Technology Group Corporation and Sanan Optoelectronics, have achieved industrialization of silicon carbide materials and devices, particularly excelling in high-power application scenarios such as electric vehicles and 5G base stations.
In terms of gallium nitride technology, many domestic enterprises are also continuously making breakthroughs. The superiority of gallium nitride materials makes them an ideal choice for future high-frequency, low-power consumption chips. Chinese companies such as Huawei and ZTE have accumulated rich experience in the research and development of gallium nitride substrates, devices, and related technologies, gradually narrowing the gap with global top enterprises and entering the market.
2. Advanced Packaging Technology
Semiconductor packaging is the bridge connecting chips to the outside world. As the integration of chips continues to increase, the importance of packaging technology in chip performance, power consumption, and heat dissipation is becoming increasingly significant. In this regard, China’s semiconductor packaging technology has also reached a globally leading level, especially in advanced technologies such as high-density packaging, system-in-package (SiP), and 3D packaging, where domestic companies like JCET and Tongfu Microelectronics have already occupied significant market shares.
Taking 3D packaging technology as an example, this technology effectively reduces the footprint of chips by stacking multiple chips together, and can improve integration and performance. China’s research and development progress in this field has been rapid. Through precise packaging design and advanced material applications, domestic companies not only have competitive pricing but can also meet the packaging needs of high-end chips, further enhancing their influence in the global semiconductor supply chain.
3. Lithography Technology
Lithography technology is one of the most critical technologies in integrated circuit manufacturing, directly determining the size, performance, and production cost of chips. Traditionally, the global lithography equipment market has been dominated by ASML from the Netherlands, especially the most advanced extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines, which almost all cutting-edge chips rely on. However, in recent years, China has made remarkable progress in lithography technology, especially in gradually breaking through the core technologies and key components of lithography machines.
Chinese companies like Shanghai Micro Electronics Equipment (SMEE) have mastered the core technology of deep ultraviolet (DUV) lithography machines and possess strong independent research and development capabilities. Although there is still a gap compared to ASML’s EUV lithography machines, Chinese companies have already broken through certain foreign technology blockades, especially in the components and supporting technologies of lithography machines, achieving a level of self-control.
In addition, domestic universities and research institutions have also gradually made breakthroughs in the theoretical research of lithography technology, laying a foundation for future industrial development. It is believed that with continuous technological advancements, China is expected to achieve greater breakthroughs in the semiconductor manufacturing field in the future.
4. Chip Design
In the chip industry, design is one of the core links. The Chinese semiconductor industry has also made significant progress in chip design in recent years, especially in the fields of processors, AI chips, and network chips. Domestic companies such as Huawei HiSilicon, Alibaba Pingtouge, and SMIC have been able to design world-class chips through independent research and development.
Among them, Huawei HiSilicon’s Kirin processors have always been regarded as a representative of Chinese chip design, especially in the mobile processor field, where Kirin chips are on par with chips from international giants like Qualcomm and Apple in terms of performance. In the field of artificial intelligence chips, Alibaba’s Pingtouge chips have also performed well, starting to gain a certain market share both domestically and internationally.
In addition to these well-known enterprises, many startups have also achieved success in niche markets. For example, in the fields of smart home and automotive electronics, Chinese chip design companies have developed the capability for independent design and production, gradually shifting from “catching up” to “running alongside,” and even achieving “leading” in certain niche areas.
5. Semiconductor Manufacturing
Although China still faces certain challenges in high-end chip manufacturing technology, in the production of mid-to-low-end chips, China’s semiconductor manufacturing industry has already occupied an important position globally. Companies like SMIC and Yangtze Memory Technologies Co. are continuously enhancing their manufacturing capabilities in memory and logic chips. Especially in the memory field, Yangtze Memory’s 3D NAND flash technology has already reached a competitive level with international peers.
Moreover, with the strong support of the Chinese government for the development of the semiconductor industry, the domestic semiconductor supply chain is gradually maturing, with increasing self-control capabilities in raw materials, equipment, and technology. In terms of manufacturing processes, although there is still a gap in advanced processes below 7nm, China has already developed strong production capabilities in processes of 28nm and above, with production capacity increasing year by year.
The Chinese semiconductor industry is rising at an astonishing speed, achieving global leadership in multiple technology fields. This series of technological advancements not only proves the rise of the Chinese semiconductor industry but also injects new vitality into the global semiconductor industry. Although China still faces challenges in some high-end technology areas, with government support, corporate innovation, and increasingly strong research and development capabilities, China’s position in the global semiconductor industry will become increasingly prominent in the future. With continuous technological breakthroughs, China is bound to become an important force in the global semiconductor industry that cannot be ignored.
