In 2017, the State Council issued the “New Generation Artificial Intelligence Development Plan,” which clearly stated the need to “set up artificial intelligence-related courses in primary and secondary schools and gradually promote programming education,” laying a solid policy foundation for the development of our school’s club courses. This plan elevates artificial intelligence education to a national strategic level, aiming to cultivate innovative thinking and technological literacy in composite talents for the new era, and to reserve new forces for the country’s technological development.
On March 5, 2025, Minister of Education Huai Jinpeng announced during the two sessions’ “Ministerial Channel” that China will officially release the “Artificial Intelligence Education White Paper,” marking the official entry of Chinese education into a new era of deep AI empowerment. This white paper is not only a strategic layout at the national level but also systematically plans how AI technology will reshape the entire chain of basic education, vocational education, and higher education from three dimensions: technological empowerment, ethical governance, and system reconstruction.
In response to the national advocacy for youth science and technology innovation education and to cultivate students’ technological innovation and practical skills, since September 2018, Chengdu Zhongbei Middle School West District Experimental School has fully utilized the district’s technical equipment center to distribute artificial intelligence kits and independently procure open-source hardware materials to carry out programming and hardware-related education, gradually launching a variety of artificial intelligence courses, such as: Data Storm Course, Create the Future Course, Drone Programming Course, Autonomous Driving Course, and Arduino Open Hardware Course… Among them, the “Arduino Open Hardware Club” course, held every Friday starting from September 2024, is particularly popular among children.
Every Friday afternoon during club class time, entering the school’s science and technology classroom, one can see students actively participating in the enthusiastic learning of the Arduino course. In the basic workshop session, students listen attentively to the teacher explaining the fundamentals of Arduino, striving to understand various sensors and actuators, and diligently learning programming syntax. By hands-on making beginner projects like LED flowing lights and temperature and humidity monitors, they have initially experienced the charm of open-source hardware, successfully transforming the theoretical knowledge they learned into practical results.
In the thematic project practice, students have shown amazing creativity. In the smart home project, they used their knowledge to achieve remote control of lighting, making homes smarter and more convenient; the creation of the smart trash can system reflects their cleverness in closely integrating technology with life. In the field of environmental technology, the air quality monitor made by students can monitor campus air quality in real-time; the garbage classification robot project demonstrates their concern and responsibility for environmental issues.
In addition, the school also provides students with a free creative space, equipped with a variety of development boards, sensors, and other tools. Here, students can unleash their creativity, design projects independently, and turn their imaginative ideas into reality.
The implementation of the Arduino open hardware course has not only sparked students’ strong interest in technology but also cultivated their innovative thinking, hands-on practical skills, and teamwork spirit. At the same time, the course integrates knowledge from multiple disciplines such as electronic circuits, programming, physics, and mathematics, helping students establish a cross-disciplinary knowledge system, laying a solid foundation for their future learning and development.
