AI Robotic Dog Transforms into a ‘Safety Sentinel’

With the expansion of highways, how can we excavate and connect the existing dual-tunnel four-lane road into a single four-lane tunnel in loose mountainous terrain? Recently, the reconstruction project of the “two-in-one” arch tunnel section of the Taizhou North section of the Yongtaiwen Expressway, a major coastal highway in Zhejiang, officially entered the construction phase, led by the robotic dog “Xiao An”.

The original Yanfeng Tunnel is 605 meters long, with the maximum excavation cross-section reaching 257.6 square meters, all situated in geological conditions of grade IV and V surrounding rock, where the self-stability of the surrounding rock is weakened, posing significant technical challenges and safety risks. In terms of inspecting the stability of the surrounding rock in the over-excavation area at the top of the tunnel, traditional methods are inefficient and high-risk, becoming a bottleneck that restricts the safe advancement of the project.

The project team introduced the intelligent robotic dog “Xiao An” to replace manual inspections in high-risk areas. “Xiao An” is equipped with an intelligent analysis system built on the DeepSeek large model, capable of real-time data collection and precise identification of loose materials and potential risks through AI algorithms; it possesses “multi-modal fusion” capabilities, with high-definition video providing it with sharp “eyes”; radar point cloud modeling technology offers a “perspective” function, allowing for the rapid generation of millimeter-level precision 3D models of the tunnel, accurately calculating void volumes and enabling proactive predictions of collapse risks, upgrading tunnel inspections from “post-discovery” to “pre-warning”.

The application of “Xiao An” is a vivid practice of promoting intelligent construction in the Taizhou North section of the Yongtaiwen Expressway project. From the drone “air traffic police” above the Wuyou hub to the inspection robot “smart sentinel” inside the new tunnel, the project is gradually establishing a new construction safety management system characterized by “human-machine collaboration and intelligent control”. In the future, the project team will promptly summarize experiences, striving to form standardized results that are replicable and promotable.
