Imagine, there is a “TA” next to you:
When you wake up in the morning, TA has already booked your breakfast, adjusted the room temperature and lighting, and even recommended today’s outfit based on your schedule and the weather;
You go to work, TA takes care of your pets and manages household chores at home;
You come home from work, TA plays your favorite music for you, helping you relax…
Doesn’t such a life feel like a sci-fi movie? So, who exactly is TA?
From ChatGPT to Sora, emerging AI technologies represented by AIGC have brought a series of “technological feasts”. At the same time, AI Agents (Artificial Intelligence Agents) known as the “ultimate tool in the AIGC field” are beginning to emerge, making it possible for AI assistants with extraordinary abilities like Jarvis from Iron Man, TARS from Interstellar, and the computer from the Star Trek series to come into our lives.
What exactly is an AI Agent?
According to OpenAI, an AI Agent is a system driven by a large language model (LLM) as its brain, capable of autonomous understanding, perception, planning, memory, and tool usage, enabling it to automate the execution of complex tasks.
Unlike traditional artificial intelligence, AI Agents have the ability to independently think and use tools to gradually achieve given goals, with broad application prospects in various fields such as intelligent assistants, autonomous driving, smart education, and healthcare, manifesting in forms like embodied intelligence and virtual agents.
It can be said that Sora shows how large models penetrate the real world, while AI Agents demonstrate how large models can change the real world. Their powerful potential for technological disruption has also attracted the attention of many tech giants.
For example, Microsoft founder Bill Gates stated that AI Agents will fundamentally change the way computers are used and disrupt the software industry; NVIDIA senior researcher Jim Fan predicted that AI Agents will “drive the evolution of civilization”; OpenAI co-founder Andrej Karpathy also predicted that AI Agents represent a crazy future.
The potential opportunities have also attracted many tech companies to increase their investments. According to IDC research, all surveyed companies believe that AI Agents are a certain direction for AIGC development, while 50% of companies have already piloted AI Agents in some capacity, and another 34% are formulating application plans for AI Agents.
Additionally, Accenture’s “Technology Outlook 2024” report pointed out that 96% of corporate executives believe that the application of the AI Agent ecosystem will bring significant opportunities to their organizations within the next three years.
In the field related to AI Agents, some member companies of Lenovo Holdings are also actively participating and helping outstanding innovative startups in the industry grow, for example:
● On January 17 this year, Lenovo Group demonstrated the application scenarios of Lenovo Personal Agent, including: knowledge Q&A, language translation, text to PPT, etc. Lenovo Group stated that the product will officially meet users in three months.
● On January 9 this year, the invested company Baichuan Intelligent released the character model Baichuan-NPC, which deeply optimized “character knowledge” and “dialogue ability”, enabling the model to better understand the contextual semantics of dialogues. In the CharacterEval (a dialogue role-playing agent evaluation standard jointly launched by Renmin University of China and Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications), Baichuan-NPC significantly outperformed others in dialogue ability, character consistency, and role attractiveness, making it the strongest character model in the Chinese domain.
● On October 27, 2023, the invested company Zhiyuan AI launched the self-developed third-generation foundational model ChatGLM3, which integrated Agent Tuning technology, activating the model’s agent capabilities, especially in intelligent planning and execution, improving by 1000% compared to ChatGLM version 2, and enabling native support for tool invocation, code execution, gaming, database operations, knowledge graph search and reasoning, operating systems, and other complex scenarios.
Although the demand is high and the prospects are good, humanity is still far from the ultimate AI Agent due to issues such as cost, hardware and software development levels, data privacy and security, ethical issues, and transparency in decision-making processes.
However, on the road to progress, humanity’s steps have never stopped. We look forward to the rapid and healthy evolution of AI Agents, bringing sci-fi into reality as soon as possible.
