【Introduction】There are multiple methods for integrating PROFIBUS PA field devices into TIA Portal. The type of integration is determined by the communication standard used on the CPU interface. Two different communication standards can be used here: Ethernet-based PROFINET communication or the classic PROFIBUS DP master system.
(1) Advanced Integration via Profinet
PROFINET is now the standard in many industries. The SIMATIC CPU acts as a smart PROFINET to PROFIBUS PA gateway, providing a simple and innovative solution for integrating PROFIBUS PA field devices into TIA Portal. The connection can be as a single CPU (marked as S1 in the figure below) or as a redundant CPU (marked as S2 in the figure below).Using the Plug & Produce feature, such as automatic addressing of PROFIBUS PA devices or readback of connected field devices, ensures easy handling and error-free integration.
The SIMATIC CPU can be conveniently integrated and used in the current TIA Portal version via GSDML import. In TIA Portal V16 and later, the SIMATIC CPU is available as standard in the device catalog, and in TIA Portal V17 and later, the SIMATIC CPU integrates MDD by default and will be fully available.

(2) Classic Integration Based on Profibus DP
(1) There are two ways to integrate PROFIBUS PA devices into the PROFIBUS DP master system: the SIMATIC DP/PA Coupler (marked as *3 in the figure below) and the SIMATIC DP/PA Link (marked as *4).

Unlike integrating PROFIBUS PA field devices via the CPU in PROFINET, when integrating PROFIBUS PA field devices through the SIMATIC DP/PA Coupler and SIMATIC DP/PA Link, there are no features like automatic addressing. Additionally, the S7-1500 R/H cannot operate the DP/PA link via redundant interfaces.
