The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) has established relevant safety standards for the normal safe operation of household appliances. The standards provide recommendations for hardware and software solutions, and the key IEC standards related to functional safety are IEC 60730-1 and IEC 60335-1. These standards relate to the functional safety of household appliances and similar environments. Depending on the application purpose, these standards classify functional safety into several safety levels.
Various testing and diagnostic methods are defined in the safety standards to ensure the safe operation of embedded control hardware and software for household appliances. The standards cover the mechanical, electrical, electronic, EMC, and abnormal operation of appliances, classified into three types of safety standards based on application scenarios:
Class A: Not used for ensuring the safety of devices (e.g., humidity control devices, timers, lighting controls, timed switches, etc.)
Class B: Prevent unsafe operation of controlled devices (e.g., thermal cut-off devices, preventing unsafe operation of washing machines, dishwashers, dryers, refrigerators, freezers, and cooking appliances)
Class C: Prevent specific hazards (e.g., automatic combustion controllers and closed water heaters)
For the vast majority of household electrical applications, Class B functional safety is required. The Class B standard of microcontrollers is related to hardware and software. Compliant components can be divided into two groups, namely MCU-related and application-related. The application-related parts depend on the customer’s application structure and need to be defined and developed by the user based on product application functional requirements (e.g., communication, IO control, interrupts, analog input/output).
Self-diagnostic library of Lingdong Co.’s Arm Cortex-M0 core microcontroller
The self-diagnostic library of Lingdong Co.’s Arm Cortex-M0 core microcontroller is suitable for the MM32 Cortex®-M0 series of 32-bit microcontrollers, providing Class B self-check functions, including testing items such as CPU registers, program counters, clocks, non-volatile memory (Flash memory), volatile memory (SRAM), etc., as defined in IEC 60730-1 Appendix H. The self-diagnostic library of Lingdong Co.’s Arm Cortex-M0 core microcontroller is integrated into the customer’s application in the form of library files, making it easy to port and helping users reduce the development time of self-diagnostic functions, accelerating the certification process.
