AI robots are more needed than we think.Today, we share a popular AI robot named Sam that emerged in early September. It was created by an 18-year-old girl and her young team.
In many families, caring for elderly parents and grandparents is always a concern. Risks of falling, medication reminders, and companionship are daily issues that often leave children uneasy. Now, Sam is trying to connect children and families, the elderly and caregivers, becoming a bridge between them and a companion assistant for those being cared for. It is also affordably priced at $800.
Sam has a cute and approachable design, specifically created for elderly care. It can automatically send emergency alerts when an elderly person falls, simultaneously providing real-time video to help family members understand the situation immediately. It can also remind the elderly to take their medication, check their schedules, and even convey customized messages from family members. The elderly do not need complex operations; they can interact naturally with Sam just by speaking. Sam also has autonomous mobility, allowing it to follow the elderly wherever they go, truly achieving “wherever the person is, the protection is there.”

Currently, Sam has entered the daily lives of over 50 families and has received bulk orders from several nursing homes, with some institutions ordering 20 units at once. For caregivers, Sam can help alleviate work pressure in monitoring safety and daily interactions. For the elderly, Sam is not just a reminder tool but also a companion that can chat and play games, helping to alleviate feelings of loneliness.

Returning to Sam’s designer, the 18-year-old Audrey Lo, who is already a serial entrepreneur. She entered the esports field at 13, attempting to build communities and events; at 16, she founded a writing company, achieving a monthly income of $30,000 within just three months. After experiencing failures and growth, she keenly realized the reality gap in elderly care during a visit to her grandmother. This moment of reflection led her and her team to establish Quo Labs and start developing Sam.

Now, Audrey is studying at the University of Pennsylvania, and creating Sam is a response to the pressing issue of societal aging.
According to predictions, by 2030, the global elderly population will reach 1.4 billion, while the infrastructure to address aging remains insufficient. The emergence of Sam is an experimental supplement to this significant gap. It integrates safety monitoring, daily assistance, and emotional companionship on a technical level, while on an emotional level, it embodies the younger generation’s care and protection for their elders.
From living rooms to nursing home corridors, Sam is not just a robot; it is more like a bridge connecting generations. It reduces worries for children and provides more safety and warmth for the elderly.
