Damper

Since X-Fusion has switched the damper adjustment from the bottom to the top of the fork, the structure of the HLR damper has not significantly changed. On the top of the fork, on the rider’s right side, there is a gold adjuster for high-speed compression and a blue adjuster for low-speed compression. At the bottom, there is a red adjuster that controls rebound damping. All the adjusters have noticeable ratchets, making it easy for riders to adjust them whether they are wearing gloves or not, and they feel solid.

This time we did not disassemble the damping rod of the TRACE HLR 36MM because it has the same damping setting as the TRACE HLR 34MM, so we will refer to the previously opened 34MM.

For the initial damping adjustment settings, I plan to match the settings of the TRACE 36MM with those of the Trace 34. I will start with 5 clicks for low-speed compression from closed, and set 6 clicks (from closed) for high-speed compression, with a 20% sag – however, the compression setting on the 36 feels like it can achieve this effect without much adjustment. This will still depend on the trails; if the settings are not suitable, I will readjust the damping clicks.

Service

No matter where you use the TRACE HLR 36, its air chamber assembly design has the advantage that the air chamber will remain very clean during use, and lubrication maintenance and readjustment are simple. The negative pressure spring replaces the negative air chamber design, which is less prone to instability in settings due to fluctuating negative air pressure. The excellent oil bladder damping design does not require complex maintenance; just wipe it clean.

The seals use common reverse brush oil seals, installed above a sponge ring soaked in grease. For cleaning and maintenance, simply wash the sponge ring and soak it in lightweight lubricating oil for good operational lubrication.

The sponge ring is completely soaked in grease. It is said that the newly designed seals have a longer lifespan and run more smoothly.

Details about the Trace 36 have not yet been provided on X-Fusion’s service website; however, historically, they have been excellent at providing technical guides and service videos, especially regarding basic services.

Repair parts are widely distributed in North America and China, ensuring that spare seals are readily available, and any shop can obtain the parts and knowledge needed to service these forks. In China, factory service and parts support are provided through the maintenance centers and some service points of Yuxiang Cycling.

First Impressions

TRACE 36 can be used right out of the box. Compared to the Trace 34, the X-Fusion Trace 36 provides a firmer support feel, fully capable of competing with other top brand forks.

I am ready, and I am excited to be among the first to use the new fork. Once I get it broken in, I will immediately provide an update on the basic settings.

This is a high-quality product, even though it is not the most expensive. Based on the design, manufacturing, assembly, and my past experience with the smaller diameter Trace 34 29’er, I am very curious about what X-Fusion has brought to the table. Looking forward to it.
