There are three native species of sea buckthorn: Chinese sea buckthorn, ribbed sea buckthorn, and Tibetan sea buckthorn, along with the introduced large-fruit sea buckthorn varieties.
The main species grown in Qinghai is the Chinese sea buckthorn, commonly known as small-fruit sea buckthorn. The unique natural environment of high altitude, long sunlight hours, strong ultraviolet rays, and thin oxygen in Qinghai endows the local sea buckthorn with biological characteristics that resist extreme cold, hypoxia, and fatigue.
In recent years, with the accelerated layout of the sea buckthorn industry in the western provinces, driven by leading agricultural enterprises, product research and market development have been continuously accelerated. Sea buckthorn series products have become increasingly popular among consumers, and the sea buckthorn industry has been thriving.
Ecological Afforestation
Since the 1950s, sea buckthorn has been used for afforestation in the eastern hilly areas of Qinghai Province. Since 2000, Qinghai has implemented the policy of returning farmland to forest and grassland, achieving a historic transformation from deforestation and land reclamation to reforestation. The resources of sea buckthorn have increased rapidly.
In the plateau areas, sea buckthorn, which is cold-resistant, drought-resistant, and can survive in gravel and barren soils, is beneficial for soil and water conservation, soil improvement, and ecological restoration, earning it the nickname “a canopy on the ground, a net on the surface.”
