July18,2022,China — STMicroelectronics’ FingerTip FTG2-SLP touch screen controller has achieved advanced features supporting the latest active matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) displays, promising to make smartphones more energy-efficient with longer battery life.
Low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) AMOLED displays and similar proprietary displays dynamically control the refresh rate based on screen usage, slowing down the refresh rate for less demanding applications while ramping it up for gaming, streaming, and other playback tasks. In this process, the display driver minimizes power consumption while ensuring an excellent user experience.
STMicroelectronics’ FingerTip FTG2-SLP touch screen controller supports synchronous and asynchronous display operating modes, allowing OEMs to maintain a seamless interaction experience even with dynamic refresh rate changes. This controller is also highly suitable for smartphones equipped with flexible AMOLED displays, where the touch sensing panel is directly integrated into the OLED light-emitting layer, allowing for very slim phone designs.
FingerTip FTG2-SLP features an Arm® Cortex®-M4 core, integrated with large-capacity flash memory, enabling advanced touch functionalities. Additionally, STMicroelectronics’ proprietary hardware and firmware, along with a special sleep mode, ensure low chip power consumption, further extending battery life.
The chip’s analog front end (AFE) employs a differential architecture and various scanning methods to ensure error-free touch detection. The internal design also ensures the controller’s inherent noise is very low, achieving a high signal-to-noise ratio. Even at the highest refresh rate, a 480Hz reporting rate captures every touch event.

The FingerTip FTG2-SLP touch screen controller is now in production.
