Knowledge and Action in Expanding Reading

Paper Summary
Editor’s Note:
In the past three years, our studio has conducted systematic research based on the Shaoxing City Education Reform Project “Exploration of Multi-Textbook Integration in Junior High School English under Theme Guidance.” Focusing on the two core directions of “Theme-Based Expansion Reading Based on Textbook Discourse” and “Interconnected Reading and Writing under the Unit Perspective,” we have held monthly thematic discussion activities and deeply integrated research results into the daily teaching practices of the author and team members. Practice has shown that students’ reading and writing abilities have significantly improved. At the same time, a series of typical lesson cases and papers have been produced during the research process. This article summarizes the phased results of the author’s research. Sincere thanks to all members of the studio, and we kindly request experts to provide criticism and guidance to facilitate the deepening and advancement of subsequent research.
[Abstract] The “Compulsory Education English Curriculum Standards (2022 Edition)” suggests that teachers supplement various types of extended discourse, while there are misconceptions about blindly expanding discourse in actual teaching. Embedded theme expansion reading enriches students’ language schemas, content schemas, and structural schemas through horizontal expansion via supplementation, extension, transfer, and comparison, enhancing their thinking abilities; through linking, deepening, and creating for vertical expansion, it enhances students’ cultural awareness, meaning construction, and expression abilities, helping students establish transferable thinking pathways.
