At Xiaomi’s spring launch event, the company officially unveiled its first professional imaging chip, the “Surge C1,” which features a dual-filter configuration that enables parallel processing of high and low-frequency signals, improving signal processing efficiency by 100%. Coupled with self-developed algorithms, the imaging performance of 3A (AF auto-focus, AWB auto white balance, AE auto exposure) has been significantly enhanced.
Of course, the future of Xiaomi’s Surge will not stop at imaging chips, as the Surge was originally conceived for SoC development.Recently, there have been reports that Xiaomi’s first self-developed 5G chip has also accelerated its progress, with plans to debut by the end of the year. The reports indicate that the Surge 5G chip will support the Sub 6GHz frequency band.
Additionally, there have been recent reports that Xiaomi is in discussions with Samsung to develop a self-developed SoC, having already held five meetings.It is said that during these discussions, the idea of creating a processor based on the ARM Cortex-X2 + Mali GPU was explored, although ARM has yet to officially announce the X2 super core.Regarding this leak, some in the industry have expressed skepticism, stating that Xiaomi has only commercially used one AP processor and lacks experience. Even with Samsung’s technical support, it seems a bit hasty to aim for the X2 super core right from the start.
After all, Xiaomi’s Senior Vice President and President of the Mobile Division, Lu Weibing, has previously stated that developing self-developed chips is very challenging, with many pitfalls that require long-term persistence and a professional understanding of chips. It is reported that the development of the Surge C1 took two years and an investment of nearly 140 million yuan.Lu Weibing stated that the Surge chips will continue to be developed generation by generation, and besides the MIX FOLD, more of Xiaomi’s high-end flagship devices will use this chip in the future.It is believed that Xiaomi is well aware of the difficulties in developing self-developed chips, especially considering the lessons learned from the Surge S1, and will not rush to create a flagship SoC right away.
Of course, in the future, Xiaomi may also launch a flagship SoC, as the company is currently moving towards the high-end market.After the launch event of the K40 Gaming Enhanced Edition, Redmi brand manager Lu Weibing stated in an interview:“As you know, I am now in charge of the global market, and the Chinese market is the most complex, competitive, and also the largest single market in the world.” Therefore, Lu Weibing stated, “The Chinese market is our home market, and we cannot afford to lose it.”“Xiaomi must pursue a high-end strategy. We are very clear internally that whoever captures the high-end market will dominate the industry. Therefore, high-end is a strategy for Xiaomi.”
