“Yes, we did it!” Accompanied by a round of cheers, a homemade drone safely landed on the open space of the campus at Caihe Middle School in Hangzhou. This drone is the result of weeks of hard work by Zhu Yongjun and his team.
Zhu Yongjun
Recently, Zhu and his partners conducted a test flight of their homemade drone at school. They named this drone “Dreamer”, which is self-explanatory.
As Zhu pressed the start button on the remote control, the propellers began to spin faster, and the drone slowly ascended, then smoothly hovered in the air. Under the guidance of Teacher Lai Bingcan, Zhu carefully operated the drone, which continuously navigated through obstacle poles. At that moment, everyone present held their breath until the “Dreamer” successfully completed its mission and landed safely, erupting into thunderous applause on the playground.
This group of youths are members of the FPV Drone Club at Caihe Middle School, and the “dream” of creating a homemade drone originated from a sudden inspiration among the students. To realize this “dream,” Zhu Yongjun and his team conducted in-depth research and learning, consulted a wealth of materials on drone design and construction, and repeatedly discussed and modified their design plans. To ensure that every component fit perfectly, they conducted multiple tests and adjustments, and under the guidance of their teachers, learned to use various tools to accurately measure and install each part. The courage to dream big, the dedication to practical application, and the power of teamwork were all essential “ingredients” for the success of the “Dreamer.”
Zhu Xincheng
In the FPV Drone Club, there are many members like Zhu Yongjun who are passionate about drones. Among them, Zhu Xincheng has a particularly deep affection for FPV.“Ever since that day when my dad took me to an outdoor park to experience FPV racing activities, my life seems to have gained an extra layer of color,” Zhu Xincheng recalled.“FPV is not just about making the drone fly; it’s about letting your heart soar with the drone, freely experiencing that magical feeling.”As he deepened his understanding of racing drones, FPV became one of his major hobbies. After entering Caihe Middle School, Zhu Xincheng eagerly participated in the school’s organized FPV training, becoming a member of the FPV club. During his first training session, he was greatly impressed; many members of the club were exceptionally skilled, and the racing drones danced through the air like obedient little birds. This inspired him to set a goal to become such an expert.
Principal Zhao Zhiying of Caihe Middle School stated:“We hope to enrich students’ campus life by offering technology clubs like the FPV Drone Club. This allows students to experience the joy of science while developing their hands-on skills and problem-solving abilities.”Through projects like the drone club, the school not only promotes the overall improvement of students’ comprehensive qualities but also plants the seeds of scientific pursuit and innovation in the hearts of children.
The imaginative technology museum at Caihe Middle School
As the country places increasing emphasis on science education, Caihe Middle School actively responds, advancing innovative practices in science education from aspects such as curriculum development and hardware provision, encouraging every student to explore. The school has not only added science extension courses featuring drones on top of the existing science curriculum but also regularly invites industry experts to conduct lectures, giving students the opportunity to engage with the latest technological developments.Additionally, the school has established a technology innovation laboratory equipped with advanced facilities for students to use, providing them with a good platform for learning and practice. In 2024 alone, students at Hangzhou Caihe Middle School won a total of fifty-one awards in national, provincial, municipal, and district-level competitions across land, sea, and air.
The successful exploration of science education at Caihe Middle School is a microcosm of the efforts in Shangcheng to strengthen science education in the new era. Shangcheng adheres to a student-centered approach, ensuring quality in curriculum, platforms, activities, and evaluations, coordinating resources, and promoting science education in the new era, enhancing students’ awareness of technological innovation.
