Image provided by Anduril Industries.Ghost 4 is a new type of autonomous Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) small Unmanned Aerial System (sUAS) developed by the US defense AI and autonomous solutions provider Anduril Industries.The small drone system is designed to meet the needs of military customers, capable of providing real-time Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR), thus creating a universal operational picture.The multi-missiondronecan perform various tasks, including cargo transport, counter-intrusion, signal intelligence, and electronic warfare.Anduril Industries launched the Ghost 4 sUAS in September 2020, with plans to begin delivering the drone in the first quarter of 2021.The potential customers for this drone will be the US military and the UK Royal Marines’ future assault teams, as they have already trialed earlier versions of the small drone. Ghost 4 VTOL sUAS Design and Features Ghost 4 measures 2.72m in length, 0.42m in width, and 0.43m in height. It is equipped with an advanced flight control system that enables the drone to operate in strong winds.The drone system is equipped with visible spectrum imaging, thermal imaging, and other dedicated sensors, allowing it to see everything. Due to the very small frontal cross-section of the drone, it may not be easily detected by targets. Ghost 4 Small Drone System Payload The portable drone can carry various payloads at once, such as electronic warfare systems, communication relay devices, indicators, spotlights, sensor balls, and speakers. This allows operators to switch between different mission configurations in a single flight.Its gimbal can be quickly released and swapped in seconds to meet specific ISR payload requirements, allowing operators to package and transport sensitive components separately.
Navigation and Control
A group of Ghost 4 drones will be able to achieve mission objectives that cannot be accomplished by a single drone. The drones can share status data among them and can operate together for battlefield handoffs to maintain continuous target coverage.Each aircraft can detect low battery levels and indicate to another drone to take over the designated task without manual intervention.An operator can control a group of Ghost 4 drones from a single ground control station, as the drone has clustering and teaming capabilities.With local, secure, closed-loop networks and encrypted backhaul networks for distributed operations, Ghost 4 can be operated anywhere in the world. Ghost 4 VTOL Drone Performance Ghost 4 is powered by a 21700 lithium-ion battery, with a flight speed of up to 136.8km/h. It can remain airborne for over 100 minutes while carrying a full mission payload and has near-silent acoustic characteristics.

Ghost is an extremely intelligent sUAS, with its onboard Lattice AI core capable of executing 320 trillion operations per second, which is nearly 100 times faster than the computing speeds of other sUAS currently available.Ghost leverages the Lattice AI Core to run computer vision and sensor fusion algorithms at the edge, allowing Ghost to identify, classify, and track points of interest with a low RF signature in low bandwidth and contested environments.
Ghost can fly on local, secure, closed-loop networks; or for distributed operations on encrypted backhaul networks.These configurations enable the Ghost small drone system to fly remotely from anywhere in the world, allowing remote commanders to collaboratively view real-time video and data sources to monitor mission progress.
Ghost can also autonomously collaborate with other Ghost assets across various missions.For example, if one Ghost detects low battery levels, it can prompt another asset to seamlessly continue the assigned task without manual intervention.
Intelligent Teaming
The Ghost platform significantly reduces manpower and pilot skill requirements, allowing a single operator to command and control a large autonomous Ghost team from a single ground control station.Ghost teams collaborate to achieve mission objectives that a single unit cannot accomplish.Furthermore, the “Ghosts” exchange status data with each other and can collaborate for battlefield handoffs to maintain persistent target coverage.
This clustering capability also enables advanced data collection that is impossible for a single airframe, allowing for distributed synchronized sensors and relaying data over a network across the sky.

Ghost is a modular, fully customizable platform that includes multiple waterproof payload mounts with data and power links for easy integration of payloads by customers, Anduril, or third parties.The airframe can be equipped with various sensors, payloads, effectors, and power supplies that can be configured for any mission and swapped onsite in seconds.
The flexibility of the airframe means that new payloads can be easily integrated when they become available.This ensures that outdated payloads, sensors, and cameras will never hinder the rest of the system.Ghost will always remain relevant and equipped with cutting-edge technology.
Multi-Mission Capability

Ghost is rugged and weatherproof, designed for extensive use in harsh conditions and challenging flight environments.The airframe can withstand mud, fresh water, and saltwater spraying from any angle and can submerge to one meter, allowing Ghost to perform missions in marine environments.The advanced flight control system allows operation in strong winds, while the metal chassis, frame, and payload can withstand environmental pressures without interrupting missions.
