First Industrial Automation ASi-5 ASSP Launched

Recently, Renesas Electronics Corporation announced the launch of the industry’s first chip solution that fully implements the ASi-5 (Actuator-Sensor Interface Specification V5) standard for industrial network devices—ASI4U-V5 ASSP. Compared to ASi-3, ASi-5 offers superior performance and usability, providing a cycle time as low as 1.27ms, cable lengths of up to 200 meters, and supporting up to 96 slave devices per network segment. The field-validated ASSP provides developers with easy-to-use fieldbus integration options for using sensors, actuators, and other industrial devices that require simple and cost-effective fieldbus connections.

First Industrial Automation ASi-5 ASSP Launched

The new ASI4U-V5 ASSP firmware has been thoroughly validated to reduce the complexity of deploying ASi-5, thereby minimizing design risks. The new ASSP complies with the ASi-5 standard and is fully backward compatible with ASi-3, while featuring shorter cycle times, higher bandwidth achieved through Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM), enhanced diagnostic capabilities, and advanced robustness. The ASSP also supports all bus topologies, including linear, star, and tree structures. Additionally, the ASSP offers easy and cost-effective integration with other industrial protocols such as IO-Link and HART.

The new ASi-5 ASSP expands Renesas Electronics’ robust industrial network product portfolio, including the RZ/N and R-IN32M series network processors, TPS-1, and IDT products using ASi-3, such as ASI4U and SAP5.

Renesas Electronics’ Senior Director of Industrial Automation, Nies Trapp, stated: “As the wave of digital transformation sweeps across factories and production equipment, the ASi-5 interface serves as a digital hub for millions of connected industrial endpoints and devices. It has been proven that Renesas’ close collaboration with its ASi-5 development partners has achieved great success, and we are proud to bring the first ASi-5 chip solution to market, enabling faster transmission, larger data volumes, and more efficient integration of intelligent sensors, becoming a crucial part of the Industrial Internet of Things.”

The new ASSP will make its debut at the Nuremberg SPS2019 (2019 Smart Manufacturing Solutions Exhibition) from November 26 to 28, 2019, at the Renesas booth.
