Dynamic Updates from the Special Zone: 'AI + Robotics' Creates a Comprehensive Intelligent Inspection System for Power Supply at the 15th National Games

Recently, the gateball event of the 15th National Games concluded successfully at the Shenzhen Longgang Universiade Sports Center. On the field, athletes competed vigorously; outside the venue, the Southern Power Grid’s Shenzhen Power Supply Bureau relied on the “AI + Robotics” to create a comprehensive intelligent inspection system for power supply, ensuring the event’s electricity with high-tech means. Recently, we visited the Shenzhen Power Supply Bureau to experience the wisdom of the digital grid and how it builds a solid and reliable power supply guarantee for the National Games.

“Human-Machine Collaboration” Replaces “Human Wave Tactics”

Unlike traditional power supply protection models, the Shenzhen Power Supply Bureau has deeply integrated cutting-edge technology into the power supply work for the gateball event of the 15th National Games, establishing a multi-dimensional intelligent inspection network. Along the power supply lines around the Universiade Center, drones autonomously take off along preset flight paths, capturing the operational status of the lines in real-time through high-definition cameras, accurately identifying potential hazards of wires and towers, achieving “no blind spots” in aerial inspections; inside the substations, inspection robots known as “Cyber Dogs” navigate flexibly, using sensitive sensors and AI recognition technology to monitor key data such as equipment temperature and sound in real-time, promptly detecting anomalies and automatically reporting them, replacing manual labor for high-intensity, high-risk inspection tasks.

“In the past, relying on manual inspections was not only time-consuming and labor-intensive but also had potential blind spots. Now, through the ‘drone + inspection robot’ ‘land, sea, and air’ collaborative model, we can achieve 24-hour uninterrupted inspections, with efficiency increased by more than three times and a significant improvement in hazard identification accuracy,” said Deng Shicong, head of the power supply protection office for the 15th National Games at the Shenzhen Power Supply Bureau. This “human-machine collaboration” power supply protection model has completely changed the limitations of the traditional “human wave tactics,” making the power supply guarantee during the gateball event more precise and efficient.

“One Map for Power Supply Protection” for Real-Time Control

At the power command center of the Shenzhen Power Supply Bureau, a large high-definition screen serves as the “smart brain” for power supply protection during the gateball event—this “one map for power supply protection” condenses all the data of the power supply facilities at the Universiade Sports Center, from 220-volt sockets to 500-kilovolt high-voltage equipment operational status, all of which can be updated in real-time and are clear at a glance. On the screen, the topology of the venue’s power supply lines is clearly visible, and live video footage is continuously played. Once there are voltage fluctuations or equipment anomalies, the system captures and issues warnings immediately, providing power protection personnel with time to respond.

“This is the smart power supply protection system we have ‘customized’ for the 15th National Games, relying on the ‘digital twin grid map’ and the first large-scale practical application of ‘Electric Honghua’ IoT devices in the country,” explained Chen Zuowei, head of the power grid group for the power supply protection office of the 15th National Games at the Shenzhen Power Supply Bureau. This system breaks down data barriers, achieving data intercommunication across three platforms: large screen, PC, and mobile. Command personnel can coordinate the overall situation on the large screen, grasping in real-time “what to protect, who will protect, and how to protect”; power protection personnel receive command instructions and report on-site conditions through the mobile end; the PC end retains complete data records for subsequent review and optimization. From issuing commands to handling anomalies, the entire process achieves “state perception across the network, command execution to the end, task control along the line, and resource allocation in unity,” ensuring that every power consumption link of the event is foolproof.

108 Power Supply Protection Locations Continuously Supporting the National Games

The power supply protection practice for this gateball event is just a microcosm of the Shenzhen Power Supply Bureau’s service for the 15th National Games. It is understood that there are a total of 108 power supply protection locations in the Shenzhen competition area of the 15th National Games, involving one-third of the substations in the Shenzhen power grid and about 450 return distribution lines, with a wide range of power supply protection and heavy tasks.

“We will continue to earnestly implement the requirements of technology in hosting the games, promoting the technological power supply protection experience from the gateball event to all power supply protection locations, and vigorously advancing the large-scale application of new technologies such as ‘Electric Honghua’, robotics, and artificial intelligence,” said Deng Shicong. In the future, the Shenzhen Power Supply Bureau will further optimize the intelligent power supply protection system, providing stable and reliable power supply guarantees for the 15th National Games with more advanced technology and more precise services, making the sports event even more exciting with the empowerment of technology.
