I am Joyous Zhou, an AX photographer from Jiying

When it comes to outdoor drone photography, especially in remote areas, our backup batteries often run out, leaving the drone as just a burden in our backpacks. We can’t find a place to recharge them, and we have to carry them throughout our hiking journey. DJI does not provide an outdoor charging solution for drones, and their batteries have various voltage, power, and current protections that cannot simply be charged by any power bank. The better the battery, the more protection thresholds there are. So, I collaborated with a friend in Shenyang who builds model aircraft to DIY an outdoor charging device for DJI drones. We are now on the second generation, which has been repeatedly tested and optimized outdoors, gradually improving the issues of insufficient power. To help everyone understand better, I recorded a short video of the testing situations of the first generation product during the exploration of the eastern slopes of Mount Everest and the second generation product on a deserted island, which you can watch in the video below.
The first generation product encountered a bug where it could only charge up to 89% and could not take in any more power, and below 20% it also could not charge. The second generation has been redesigned; although its size and weight have increased, its stability and applicability are much stronger. The built-in battery can also charge mobile phones, acting as a power bank, and it has fixed the previous bugs.
Future Improvements
While the second generation has improved functionality, its size and weight can still be optimized. The product can be made more integrated and compact, making it more suitable for outdoor travel. I hope these improvements will be made in the next generation of products. The joy of photography is not just in capturing satisfactory photos; DIY-ing your own photography gear is also a part of that joy.
