Cultivating Leading Talents in the Semiconductor Field

Cultivating Leading Talents in the Semiconductor FieldEditor’s Note

For a century-long plan, education is fundamental. Good education aims to cultivate roots, forge souls, enlighten minds, and nurture hearts. In preparation for the evaluation of undergraduate education and teaching in ordinary higher education institutions, the Hunan University Media Center, in collaboration with the Academic Affairs Office, has launched the “Education with Purpose, Harvest through Efforts” series, showcasing the teaching reform practices of various colleges and systematically presenting the Hunan University model of synchronous resonance between education and discipline development. With a focus on education, and research aimed at the future, Hunan University has been on the path of educational innovation. Today, we will take a closer look at the School of Semiconductor (Integrated Circuit School).

The history of semiconductor-related disciplines at Hunan University can be traced back to the semiconductor physics and devices major established in 1972. After more than fifty years of development, it has become a first-class and distinctive major in the country. The School of Semiconductor (Integrated Circuit School) was established in October 2021, addressing the national major needs in the integrated circuit and semiconductor fields, as well as the technical and talent demands of Hunan Province’s key electronic information industry. Its goal is to support the construction of first-class disciplines in electronic science and technology, integrated circuit science and engineering, and to conduct scientific research, talent training, and social services in four directions: next-generation semiconductor technology, third-generation semiconductors and power devices, integrated circuits and EDA, and display and sensing technology. The school focuses on tackling fundamental and critical scientific issues in electronic devices and cultivating leading talents in the semiconductor and integrated circuit fields.

Building a First-Class Teaching Team, Practicing the Philosophy of Educating for the Public Good

The School of Semiconductor(Integrated Circuit School) places great importance on faculty development, formulating talent introduction plans, with the leadership team taking the lead in conducting talent recruitment both domestically and internationally.

The School of Semiconductor(Integrated Circuit School) currently has full-time teachers from top international universities such as Tsinghua University, Peking University, the University of Cambridge, UCLA, the University of Washington, Rice University, Nanyang Technological University, and the National University of Singapore, with 24% of the faculty being nationally recognized talents.

To enhance the quality of undergraduate education, the School of Semiconductor(Integrated Circuit School) organizes a series of teaching salons, collective lesson preparation, and thematic discussions to strengthen the teaching team. Since 2024, faculty members have received awards in teaching competitions, university-level teaching excellence awards, new teacher awards, and micro-teaching practice awards, totaling six awards.

Building the “4I” Talent Development Model, Promoting the Spirit of Practical Application

The School of Semiconductor(Integrated Circuit School) explores the “4I” concept for cultivating innovative and entrepreneurial talents in the semiconductor and integrated circuit fields, which includes Idea (Innovative Thinking) – Intelligent Property (Awareness of Intellectual Property) – Industrialization (Ability for Industrialization) – Initial Public Offerings (Market Perspective). This aims to create a panoramic collaborative education model driven by project-based learning, interdisciplinary integration, and industry-academia-research collaboration, cultivating versatile talents with innovative thinking, awareness of intellectual property, practical industrialization skills, and market perspectives.

Based on the “4I” concept, the School of Semiconductor(Integrated Circuit School) offers a course titled “Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Integrated Circuits,” which will be launched for the first time in the fall semester of 2024. A total of 114 undergraduate students from different colleges will participate in 42 research projects, with faculty from the Law School, Business Administration, and other colleges involved in the theoretical instruction.

Creating a First-Class Educational Platform, Cultivating National Strategic Talents

The School of Semiconductor(Integrated Circuit School) has a first-class development platform, based on the National Key Laboratory of Power Semiconductor and Integrated Technology (co-built with CRRC Zhuzhou), the National Third-Generation Semiconductor Technology Innovation Center (Hunan), and the Ministry of Education Engineering Research Center for Advanced Semiconductor Technology and Applications, conducting scientific research and talent training on national and provincial levels.

To further implement the national strategy of integrating science and education, collaborative innovation, and cooperative talent cultivation, and to cultivate leading talents in the fields of semiconductors and integrated circuits, the School of Semiconductor(Integrated Circuit School) promotes the establishment of the “Huang Kun Talents Class” in collaboration with the Institute of Semiconductor Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, selecting a group of outstanding undergraduates for joint key training and providing ample resource support. Currently, the school continues to promote in-depth cooperation with the Institute of Microelectronics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, for talent cultivation.

Inheriting Excellent Historical Culture, Building a “Three Full” Talent Development System

The School of Semiconductor(Integrated Circuit School) places great emphasis on the construction of party and class organizations, relying on party branches to strengthen ideological education, building a good academic atmosphere through class organizations, and conducting diverse cultural and sports activities through youth organizations. Party leaders and cadres practice the “frontline rule,” entering dormitories, laboratories, workstations, and classrooms to engage in in-depth communication with students.

As an engineering department, to implement the comprehensive development goals of talent cultivation in moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetic, and labor aspects, the School of Semiconductor(Integrated Circuit School) fully explores traditional cultural elements and cultural resources around the school, conducting a series of cultural, labor, and artistic education activities themed “Campus Life in the Twenty-Four Solar Terms” and regular mobile thematic education. Faculty and students celebrate festivals together, attend themed party classes, engage in discussions, and conduct enterprise study tours, gradually cultivating a distinctive, ambitious, and first-class academic atmosphere, teaching style, and work ethic.
