Cover Article
Large slow-moving landslides and Deep-Seated Gravitational Slope Deformations (DSGSD) pose a significant threat to long linear infrastructures due to their continuous movement, which can damage roads, tunnels, and pipelines. To mitigate these hazards, best practices typically involve non-structural measures such as monitoring, at least in the initial response phase. Monitoring these landslides will help identify potential areas on the slope that may become unstable due to secondary landslides, providing decision-makers with data on road safety and establishing alert thresholds.
The Ganderberg Landslide, located in the South Tyrol Autonomous Province of Northern Italy, has a DSGSD covering an area of approximately 4 square kilometers and intersects a road connecting Italy and Austria. In 1401, a portion of the scar from the DSGSD collapsed, forming a landslide dam and creating a 35-meter deep reservoir known as Kummersee (Lake of Sorrow). In the following century, the breach of the landslide dam resulted in casualties in the downstream valley.
In the cover photo, we can see the remnants of the 1401 landslide dam at the top of the visible section of the Passer River. The geomorphic effect of the landslide dam created a significant step along the river profile, with a 190-meter drop in altitude over less than 2 kilometers at the foot of the DSGSD (on the right side of the photo). To dissipate the river flow energy, a total of 66 check dams were constructed. However, considering the movement of the DSGSD at the toe, these check dams were built with independent wing walls that can slide, allowing for some displacement to relieve structural load. One of the newly constructed check dams is also equipped with a steel grid for water intake. In this way, part of the river discharge is diverted to a micro-hydroelectric turbine, converting potentially hazardous energy into useful electrical energy for sustainable power production.
Today, another rock slab has been identified in the Ganderberg scar, which has the potential to detach and form a new landslide dam, posing significant risks to the densely populated downstream valley. Currently, a state-of-the-art permanent Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is continuously monitoring this slab, but the danger of a new landslide dam remains ever-present. Will human-built structures withstand the natural evolution of the landscape? How will the dialectic between natural events and human responses develop over the next few hundred years? This is the central theme of the cover image in Volume 22, Issue 1 of the Journal of Mountain Science.
