The latest TIOBE programming language rankings for December have been released. Let’s make some predictions on who will win this year’s annual programming language award!

C++ Surpasses Java for the First Time
Compared to last month, the biggest change in the December rankings is that C++ has surpassed Java for the first time with a slight advantage of 0.12%, holding 11.94% of the market share compared to Java’s 11.82%.
In fact, back in June, TIOBE CEO Paul Jansen predicted, “C++ will be the next language to surpass Java. The high performance of advanced programming is the key reason for C++’s outstanding performance. The C++ language is revised every three years, and these revisions include groundbreaking new features that make the language comparable to C# and Java, but without the performance loss of garbage collection. With the push of the latest version C++20, C++ is set to break into the TOP 3 of the TIOBE rankings, becoming a strong competitor.”
Now, just a few months later, C++ has indeed reached the third position, marking the first time since the TIOBE index was released in 2001 that Java has fallen out of the Top 3.

Who Will Win the 2022 Annual Programming Language Award?
With just one month left in 2022, Python’s stable output has been evident, maintaining a rapid growth trend, now holding 16.66% of the market share with a 3.76% increase, making it one of the best candidates for the annual programming language award.
Additionally, according to TIOBE’s official predictions, C and C++ are also candidates for the 2022 annual programming language award. Although Python and C have won this award multiple times, C++ last won the annual programming language award in 2003. Whether C++ can take the top spot this year remains to be seen in next month’s rankings.

Ranking of Other Programming Languages
Among more programming languages, we also see Kotlin and Julia getting closer to the Top 20.

Programming Language “Hall of Fame” (2003-2021)

[Note]:
The TIOBE programming language community ranking is an indicator of the popularity trends of programming languages, updated monthly. This ranking is based on the number of global technical engineers, courses, and third-party vendors, including popular search engines and technical communities such as Google, Baidu, Wikipedia, CSDN, Bing, Hao 123, etc. For detailed calculation methods, see: https://www.tiobe.com/tiobe-index/programming-languages-definition/. Please note that this ranking only reflects the popularity of a programming language and does not indicate the quality of a programming language or the quantity of code written in a language.
This ranking can be used to assess whether your programming skills are up to date and can also serve as a basis for language selection when developing new systems.
