On August 13, during the SIGGRAPH conference, Arm held a media communication meeting to officially release its new Arm Neural Technology, introducing a dedicated neural accelerator in the Arm GPU set to launch in 2026. Devices equipped with this technology are expected to be available by the end of 2026. Lei Technology was invited to attend the communication meeting and brings you the latest firsthand information.

The release of Arm Neural Technology marks a significant advancement, enabling mobile devices to achieve desktop-level AI graphics performance. In simple terms, this is achieved by deeply embedding a neural accelerator within the Arm GPU, effectively equipping each shader with a “mini NPU,” resulting in lower latency and higher energy efficiency in the interaction between AI and the graphics pipeline..

The GPU only needs to render about 25% of the pixels and uses AI to reconstruct the full-resolution image, thereby reducing the GPU workload by up to 50%, achieving a dual enhancement in performance and energy efficiency. Moreover, Arm has chosen to fully open the model architecture, weights, and tools to developers, allowing them to leverage Arm’s AI tools to further optimize AI functionalities in games and address compatibility issues.

Additionally, Arm Neural Technology provides an upgrade solution for Arm ASR through an API-compatible method, namely Arm Neural Super Sampling (Arm NSS). By upgrading traditional shader algorithms to AI neural inference, this use case allows mobile devices to achieve image quality close to Nvidia’s DLSS2 with higher efficiency.

In Arm’s “Magic Castle” demonstration, Arm NSS can optimize and upgrade 540p to 1080p in just 4 milliseconds, with image quality nearly indistinguishable from native rendering. The performance freed from resolution rendering can be used to enhance special effects rendering and increase frame rates, while also potentially reducing average power consumption, providing mobile devices with longer gaming endurance.

In recent years, the application of AI in mobile gaming has expanded significantly, whether it is super-resolution, super-frame, or edge-side AI computation, all requiring robust AI computing power. To compensate for the insufficient GPU computing power, manufacturers like iQOO have chosen to integrate dedicated gaming chips into gaming phones to share the GPU’s computational load, achieving parallel super-resolution and super-frame.

However, with the widespread adoption of Arm Neural Technology, there should no longer be a need to set up separate gaming chips, as the built-in neural accelerator in the GPU can easily meet the AI computing power requirements during GPU operations, marking the official entry of mobile GPUs into the era of native AI.

Furthermore, Arm announced two neural graphics technologies currently under development: Neural Frame Rate Upscaling (NFRU), which increases 30FPS to 60FPS by generating intermediate frames without doubling the rendering load; Neural Super Sampling and Denoising (NSSD), which provides intelligent reconstruction and denoising for ray tracing, allowing mobile devices to achieve high-quality, noise-free images with fewer rays.

During this release, Arm also launched the world’s first fully open neural graphics development kit, enabling developers to start development immediately before the hardware is released. Currently, Arm has partnered with game studios such as NetEase Games, Tencent Games, and Sumo Digital to collaboratively develop this development kit, accelerating the technology’s implementation and popularization.

Regarding Arm’s new AI technology, NetEase Games has given high praise, stating, “One of NetEase Games’ missions is to achieve console-level visual experiences on every mobile phone. We believe that the new technology launched by Arm is an important step in helping us fulfill this mission.” As Arm’s product management director Steve Steele stated at the conference, various forms of AI have always been an indispensable component of the mobile experience, and AI plays a crucial role in mobile gaming experiences.

It can be said that AI is reshaping the entire mobile ecosystem and experience, and AI will continue to be a core driving force for mobile platforms, promoting the development of the entire smart ecosystem. With devices equipped with Arm Neural Technology expected to launch by the end of 2026, and Arm having fully opened the corresponding development kit, game development studios can start development immediately, and Lei Technology is very much looking forward to the exciting experiences this technology will bring to mobile games next year.
