When we develop more complex products, we often use SoCs. Such products generally run on Linux or Android systems, and the hardware tends to be more complex, typically consisting of SoC + DDR3/DDR4 + eMMC + a bunch of peripherals, with the board usually having multiple layers, starting from 4 layers, and 6 or 8 layers being quite common.
Complexity means a higher chance of errors, longer development cycles, and greater risks. A small mistake can lead to significant issues, and if the small system fails to boot, it becomes even more awkward, making troubleshooting difficult. Therefore, we sometimes directly purchase core boards for projects and design the peripheral circuits ourselves.
This approach offers several benefits. Firstly, the small system can run reliably because the core board functions as a self-contained small system, minimizing concerns about failures caused by undetermined reasons; at worst, the issue lies in the peripheral circuit design, which can be easily modified, thus reducing risk and shortening the development cycle. Secondly, peripheral interface boards do not need to be as multilayered as core boards, sometimes even a 2-layer board suffices, which can also lead to cost advantages. Thirdly, these SoCs are usually BGA packaged, along with eMMC, requiring high production control standards. By using a core board, the responsibility for these challenges is transferred to the supplier, making in-house production less daunting.
