Xpeng's Self-Developed Turing Chip Enters Mass Production Stage

On April 14, Chinese electric vehicle startup Xpeng announced that its self-developed Turing system-on-chip (SoC) has officially entered the mass production stage.

The Turing SoC chip is first equipped in the 2024 MONA M03 pure electric sedan. This model is specifically designed for ride-hailing fleets, aiming for an affordable price.Initially customized and developed by Didi for ride-hailing operations, Xpeng later acquired the project from Didi.

Previously, the AI computing power for Xpeng’s autonomous driving system was provided byNVIDIA Orin SoC, but due to concerns that the Biden administration might impose chip supply restrictions on China, Xpeng initiated the development of the Turing chip in 2020 to support itsL4 level fully autonomous driving plans.

In addition to self-developed hardware, Xpeng has also developed supporting neural network algorithms—compared to the NVIDIA-based XNGP central ADAS controller, the new solution reducescomputing power requirements by 20%,latency by 100 milliseconds, whileincreasing data processing capacity by three times.

The Turing SoC features a40-core processor, integrating two self-developed neural processing units (NPU), two image signal processors (ISP), and a domain-specific architecture (DSA).
