First, we need to understand what these two English abbreviations represent.
Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) = WLAN
Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) = Wi-Fi
This can explain a lot. The true wireless local area network is collectively referred to as WLAN, while Wi-Fi is just one of its certification functions, a commercial certification. Products that have Wi-Fi certification comply with the IEEE 802.11b wireless network standard, which is currently the most widely used WLAN standard operating in the 2.4GHz band. The IEEE 802.11b wireless network standard is a variant of the IEEE 802.11 network standard, with a maximum bandwidth of 11 Mbps. In cases of weak signals or interference, the bandwidth can be adjusted to 5.5 Mbps, 2 Mbps, and 1 Mbps. This automatic bandwidth adjustment effectively ensures the stability and reliability of the network.
WLAN is a function of mobile phones. For networks, it is a network mode; for mobile phones, it is a function, equivalent to a wireless network card on a computer. In areas covered by WLAN, if your phone also has WLAN functionality, you can connect to the environment’s WLAN network using your phone’s WLAN feature. Using this method to access the internet does not consume your monthly data plan, and generally, the internet experience is also quite good.
The main difference between WLAN and Wi-Fi is that WLAN, as a type of network, has Wi-Fi as its standard. WLAN can reach up to 5KM (with antennas), which Wi-Fi cannot match. One can understand that WLAN refers to the category of wireless local area networks, and there are many ways to build a wireless local area network, thus using many different data transmission standards, with Wi-Fi being one of those standards. Traditional mobile phones support Wi-Fi networks that operate on the 2.4G frequency band because this band is a public band that does not require a license. However, there are now phones that support Wi-Fi on other frequency bands (such as our Xiaomi phone series). Additionally, as a mobile phone function, WLAN differs from Wi-Fi in that WLAN is a feature, while Wi-Fi is a certification. Mobile phones with Wi-Fi certification have the WLAN functionality that meets the Wi-Fi standard.
So, why is the wireless network on the iPhone called Wi-Fi? In fact, if you use the Chinese version, it should display “Wireless Local Area Network,” which means the same as what Android shows as WLAN. However, in foreign versions, Wi-Fi is generally used to represent commercially certified wireless local area networks. So, take a closer look; is your version not the Chinese version?
