However, the monitors shining throughout the venue are surprisingly eye-catching. Among these monitors, mini LED is a name that keeps appearing. What does it actually mean? With so many manufacturers promoting it, is it really that “good”? Let’s talk about it today.

In simple terms, mini LED uses smaller LED lights as the backlight source for LCD displays. Because the light points are small, it can also be divided into many independently controlled brightness areas. Technically, small LED lights are not a problem, and independent brightness control only requires adding a small number of control chips, circuits, and software. So there is no technical threshold; as the technology matures, various manufacturers immediately launched commercial products.

From the construction of the display, mini LED is not much different from regular LED, but more flexible brightness control can bring better display effects. Generally, mini LED monitors have dozens to hundreds of independently controlled brightness areas, while high-end products can have over a thousand controllable brightness areas. Flagship products like Dell UP3221Q even have 2000 controllable brightness areas.

Zone control brightness can make dark areas darker and bright areas brighter in the same image, resulting in higher contrast and a more shocking visual experience. It’s estimated that the contrast of mini LED monitors can exceed ten thousand, far higher than the current monitors’ 1000:1 ratio. The currently popular HDR also requires a combination of brightness and color, which is equally easy for mini LED.

As for gamer friends, sometimes it’s better to minimize overly bright and dark areas to see hidden objects and enemies more clearly. This was originally a “secret weapon” for some gaming monitors, and the actual effect is just average. However, with mini LED, it’s easy to adjust the backlight brightness of corresponding areas, brightening dark corners and reducing bright areas, making it more natural.

Currently, mini LED is mainly used in high-end monitors, which makes the visual difference between mid-range and high-end monitors even larger. High-end monitors are more attractive, but the prices are really… So, should you choose a more affordable mid-range monitor or a higher performance high-end monitor? This is a dilemma for everyone.

My suggestion is that if you urgently need it, especially for professional needs, it’s worth spending a bit more on a mini LED; the effect will definitely justify the price. For those who are not in a hurry, you can let your old monitor last another year or so. This technology is really not complicated, and after manufacturers have made enough profit, it’s only a matter of time before it becomes available in mid-range products. I estimate that by this time next year, mini LED mid-range monitors will be everywhere, and finding a satisfactory and affordable one will definitely not be a problem.
