What is an AI Agent?

Today, let’s discuss what exactly an AI Agent is. Recently, the concept of intelligent agents has become quite popular, and I will share my personal understanding of it. If there are any inaccuracies, I welcome your criticism and corrections. AI refers to the artificial intelligence technologies we are familiar with today, such as ChatGPT, DeepSeek, Claude, Gemini, Doubao, and others. These AIs can provide answers when you ask them questions, but they cannot perform operations for you unless you connect to ports or APIs yourself. AI Agent! Bingo! An AI Agent is an intelligent entity that combines artificial intelligence with ports, capable of knowing the answers and executing operations for you! You no longer need to ask the AI and then perform the operations yourself. In fact, this AI Agent is very similar to us humans; we also think of solutions in our minds before we can take action to solve problems. Therefore, the AI Agent mainly consists of three components: the brain, memory, and tools. Brain: This is what we just mentioned, which helps you think of solutions but cannot execute them, similar to the AIs available on the market, such as DeepSeek, Doubao, GPT, etc. Memory: The memory of the AI primarily involves remembering the context of conversations to provide answers. This is easy to understand; we humans also need memory. For example, if you revise a PowerPoint presentation and your boss gives you certain requirements, you need to remember them to make the changes. After you finish, if they ask you to modify it again based on the previous version, it’s easy to understand the concept of memory here, so I won’t elaborate further. Tools: These are the ports, equivalent to giving the brain hands and feet, allowing it to move and work, providing labor. The brain guides the hands and feet to perform activities. It’s quite simple, right? The AI Agent is mainly composed of these three parts. Once you understand how to connect to specific APIs, you can do anything you want. In the next article, I will explain in detail what an API is and what HTTP is.
