Understanding Computer Hardware: A Detailed Guide to Common Motherboard Interfaces

The motherboard, as one of the most fundamental components of a computer, contains many different types of interfaces. Today, I will introduce the functions of each interface for those who are not very familiar with this aspect.

First, let’s look at the side interfaces, as shown in the figure:

Description of common interfaces:

SATA hard drive interface: Serial ATA is a new type of hard drive interface that has been upgraded from PATA, significantly improving transmission speed.

PCIE interface: This is the graphics card slot, primarily designed to provide high-performance graphics acceleration support for gaming enthusiasts.

CPU socket: The CPU interface, abbreviated as “Central Processing Unit”, is where the CPU is inserted. The CPU is the most critical device in a computer.

Memory slots: This interface is primarily used to expand memory usage. Motherboards generally have two memory slots. Memory is comparable to the running memory of a smartphone.

Main power interface: This is the power supply interface for the motherboard, which is commonly a universal 20+4 pin power supply located in the middle of the long edge of the motherboard and is quite large.

Auxiliary power interface: Also known as the CPU power interface, it is used to supply power to the CPU. Generally, the current CPU power supply is provided by an 8-pin interface, while some lower-end motherboards may use an older 4-pin interface. These two interfaces are compatible.

The above are detailed explanations of the commonly used interfaces on the motherboard. If you find it useful, please give it a thumbs up!
