Two Methods to Connect Siemens DP Slave to Redundant CPU

【Introduction】 A PROFIBUS DP slave with only one PROFIBUS DP interface can be connected to a redundant CPU via PROFINET or PROFIBUS. Below, we introduce two methods to achieve this using IE/PB LINK HA and Y LINK.

Two Methods to Connect Siemens DP Slave to Redundant CPU

(1) Recommended PROFINET Connection

IE/PB LINK HA is a gateway between Industrial Ethernet and PROFIBUS DP. It enables seamless integration of PROFIBUS devices with the PROFINET fieldbus. In this case, IE/PB LINK HA acts as a proxy, meaning that from the perspective of the IO controller, the integrated DP slave is treated as an IO device with an Ethernet interface.

The following diagram shows two ways to integrate IE/PB LINK HA into the PROFINET system.

  • (1) Integrate IE/PB LINK HA into PROFINET S2 System

  • (2) Integrate IE/PB LINK HA into Redundant PROFINET R1 System

When using IE/PB LINK HA as a PROFINET S2 device, it can operate up to 64 PROFIBUS DP slaves. For IE/PB LINK HA as an S2 device, the limit for DP inputs/DP outputs is 2048 bytes. For Y LINK devices, the input and output limit is 240 bytes.
Note: In the PCS 7 environment, IE/PB link does not support modular DP slaves.

(2) Classic PROFIBUS DP Connection

Y LINK can create a gateway from the redundant DP master system to the lower-level DP master system. Y LINK consists of two IM 153-2 interface modules and one Y coupler.

Y LINK connects to the redundant DP master system through the interface module, while remote IO devices connect to Y LINK through the Y coupler. One Y LINK can operate up to 64 PROFIBUS DP slaves. The following diagram shows an example of how to establish the connection.
