FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) is a chip that can change its functionality through programming. Its characteristics include that many customized chips use FPGA design, allowing users to obtain usable chips without the need for production; designing ASIC circuits with FPGA results in shorter cycles, lower costs, reduced risks, and stable quality; flexible logic units, high integration, and wide applicability; on-site reprogramming with low maintenance costs; and FPGA supports parallel computing, meeting multiple functional needs simultaneously.

FPGA has a wide range of applications:
1. Communication Field
FPGA’s application in the communication field is very extensive and can be said to be one of the earliest directions for FPGA development.
2. Complex Digital Signal Processing
For complex digital signal processing, FPGA chip suppliers have introduced DDS, FFT, IFFT, fixed-point addition and subtraction, and fixed-point to floating-point IP cores, making it occupy an important position in many precision instruments and high-end medical equipment for complex digital signal processing applications.
3. Video Image Processing
In the field of image and video processing, it was previously dominated by high-end DSP chips or Huawei’s HiSilicon series chips. Generally, Huawei’s HiSilicon chips meet the needs of mid-to-low-end image and video processing, while TI’s DSP chips have increased the clock frequency to over GHz, targeting the mid-to-high-end image and video processing field.
4. High-Speed Interface Field
In the complex high-speed interface field, FPGA is almost tailor-made. The parallel architecture of FPGA and hundreds of IO ports can be reused, and it can directly perform fast read and write operations on DDR3 memory data through the MIG IP core, occupying absolute advantages in pin configuration and high-speed data storage processing.
5. Artificial Intelligence
FPGA’s applications in artificial intelligence are numerous, with applications like Baidu’s self-driving cars and DJI’s drones, where many sensors collect information about traffic lights, obstacles, and routes, requiring embedded SOC chips to respond and process in real-time.
6. IC Verification
FPGA verification mainly involves porting IC code to FPGA, using FPGA’s EDA tools for synthesis, simulation, layout, and routing to finally generate a .bit file for the FPGA verification board, to evaluate and verify each function of the IC.
