Although general system designs tend to adopt lower power supply voltages, due to the physical characteristics of signal-to-noise ratio and the prevalence of 5V sensors, 5V circuits remain a popular design approach. However, choosing a 5V MCU does not mean you have to compromise on modern MCU advantages such as performance, low power consumption, or security.
MSPM0H321x is a series of MCUs that allow designers to address the design challenges of 5V systems, while also enhancing system security, power efficiency, and performance.
So, what new features does the MSPM0H321x series 5V MCU offer?
The MSPM0H321x series (including MSPM0H3216) is built on the MSPM0 ecosystem, which is based on general hardware, tools, and software libraries. With these devices and resources, hardware and software engineers can easily reuse existing code from MSPM0-based designs across various applications (from power tools to automotive designs, and even kitchen appliances, as shown in Figure 1).

These MCUs provide pin-to-pin compatibility, which helps to accelerate device replacement and upgrades. Since all MSPM0 devices use the DriverLib API, software portability between devices in the MSPM0 series is also simplified.MSPM0H321x MCUs integrate security, low power operation, and performance.
Security
The MSPM0H321x 5V MCU series is built on a secure foundation of the MSPM0 platform, providing flexible and cost-effective security configuration features. The Customer Security Code (CSC) hardware security architecture allows designers to lock a customizable root of trust into their designs.
CSC provides hardware features that enforce authenticated secure boot with rollback protection.MSPM0H321x MCUs also support secure firmware updates in the field. As security becomes increasingly important in products with supporting software, MSPM0H321x MCUs enable applications to meet current security requirements and be prepared for future needs.
Low Power Consumption
MSPM0H321x MCUs feature low power performance and low-latency power mode transition capabilities. This allows applications to “sleep as much as possible,” potentially saving more power. With the MSPM0 System Control (SYSCTL) architecture, applications can achieve a low power state of 3.5uA in standby mode while keeping SRAM, CPU, and peripherals in standby, and can return to run mode within 20us.
In cases where lower latency is required to receive commands from standby via UART or I2C bus, the MSPM0H321x series supports asynchronous fast clock requests, which can request a fast clock upon detecting incoming data, even before the CPU wakes up.
Features and Performance
Despite focusing on low power performance, the MSPM0H321x series also combines analog and digital functionalities, implemented by an Arm® Cortex-M0+® CPU running at 32MHz, with single-cycle multiplication extension and up to 64kB of flash memory and 8kB of SRAM. The 12-bit ADC sampling rate reaches up to 1.5MSPS, with up to 27 input channels to support various control and sensing applications.
Advanced Control Timer (TIMA) features enhanced PWM generation modes suitable for complementary pairs with dead-time functionality and ultra-low latency fault handling. Additionally, the MSPM0H321x series also offers multiple package options, including two with a pin pitch of 0.8mm, suitable for ultra-low-cost PCB assembly processes.
Since the launch of the MCU, embedded engineers have been continuously seeking innovative ways to leverage these versatile devices. The MSPM0 product series includes devices that support power supply voltages from 1.62V to 3.6V, helping engineers adopt lower operating voltages to reduce system power consumption and cost requirements. However, modern MCUs still need to support 5V power supply voltages.
In applications with traditional 5V circuits or complex noise immunity challenges, the MSPM0H321x MCUs enable hardware designers to work natively in 5V systems and benefit from innovative security, low power, and performance features.
