Several ESP32 P4 Development Boards Available, but Prices Remain High

Recently, I searched on Taobao and found that several brands have launched ESP32 P4 development boards.

It seems quite interesting.

First, there is the official listing from Espressif’s store for the

ESP32-P4-Function-EV-Board

(engineering sample version).

This is a kit that includes a7-inch1024×600capacitive touch screen, a2-megapixelMIPI CSI interface camera, and corresponding accessories.

The accessories are quite complete.

The development board is equipped with the ESP32 P4 chip and theESP32-C6-Mini-1 module.

It has MIPI CSI,MIPI DSI, microphone, speaker interface, USB 2.0 interface, USB 2.0 Type-C interface, Type-C power interface, USB to UART Type-C interface, and a 100M Ethernet port.

Power switch, 40-pin header interface, and MicroSD card slot.

Compared to previous ESP32 development boards, the interfaces are a bit more abundant.

They have also released the schematics and specifications for the development board, display adapter board, and camera adapter board.

Hardware-wise, it is basically ready to play.

The price is

399

Excluding the screen and camera, I estimate that the pure development board should be under 200.

Banli Electronics has also launched their own ESP32-P4 development board, which is quite minimalistic, just a display screen with the ESP32 P4 circuitry.

The display is also a7-inch touch screen..

Compared to the official development board, it lacks an Ethernet port but has an RTC battery slot and integrates RTC. It also has MX 1.25-2P battery slot..

IO interfaces need to be routed through FPC cables, with two 14P FPC cable slots.

The price is218

I found that the cheapest is the ZhenDian YuanZi ESP32-P4 development board.

The current promotional price is175.5

However, it does not come with a screen, which makes me feel that the cost-performance ratio is not that high. Instead, it comes with an infrared remote control that I find quite useless.

If you want to add a screen, using the official 7-inch screen, the price instantly rises to 423. The cost-performance ratio is even worse than the official 399.

The design of the ZhenDian YuanZi development board feels reminiscent of previous development board designs.

It is a small ESP32-P4 development board connected to an expansion board via headers. The small development board has MIPI CSI and MIPI DSI.

It is important to note that there is a TF card interface, which is an interface, not a slot. Another point is that the development board does not integrate the ESP32-C6, meaning that Wi-Fi and Ethernet need to be addressed separately.

The expansion board has many header interfaces, but it also lacks an Ethernet port, and it has other interfaces like RGB LCD screen interface, onboard CAN and RS485 interfaces, onboard infrared transceiver, six-axis gyroscope, buzzer, light sensor, onboard speaker, and microphone.

Personally, I believe the interface layout is not as reasonable as the official one, the expansion board is smaller, and the interface layout is quite crowded, making it more suitable for users who want many interfaces and need CAN and RS485 interfaces.

However, I think that while ZhenDian YuanZi appears cheaper, if you want to use a screen, it quickly becomes the least cost-effective development board. Moreover, without an onboard Wi-Fi module, the application scenarios are somewhat limited.

Overall, among these development boards, I found that they each have their own application scenarios, and it is not that complicated.

In simple terms, if you want to experience all the functions and interfaces of the ESP32-P4, I recommend directly purchasing the official 399 development board, which is still the most comfortable option, and the documentation is quite rich, with many users likely to be involved.

If you mainly want to experience the display capabilities of the ESP32-P4, need a screen, and prefer a lower price, I recommend choosing the display development board from Banli Electronics, which is basically sufficient, the only downside is that using the IO interfaces requires routing through FPC, which feels a bit cumbersome, clearly leaning towards application rather than development and playing with IO.

As for ZhenDian YuanZi, it has many interfaces, but also significant drawbacks; if you want to work with a display, I do not recommend this one, and if you want Wi-Fi, I also do not recommend it, at least I have not seen a Wi-Fi module on the development board. It is only suitable for users who do not need a display, do not need to connect to the internet, but require many interfaces, especially industrial interfaces.
